film from camcorder to imac 2009

HI all
I have recently bought an imac desktop(october 2009). I have a JVC camcorder bought in 2001 with my film on those little tapes. I have no idea on the type of wire I need to connect the camcorder to imac to transfer film and the program that will do this transference. I have been told to use firewire 800 but I have also been told that this wire does not have the appropriate connecting jack for the camera. This may sound a naive question to those who know but I have been a pc user for a while now I am using both types.
