Over the last few years I have heard great thinks about the xbox media center now called XBMC. Despite the fact the xbox is very old there were still a few games I wanted to play. So I put the word out I was looking for xbox. My friends side ?I have 2 for 40.00? I got them home to find out the DVD ROM drive was totally out in one the the other was well on its way (some friend).

So I faced a even bigger problem trying to mod 2 systems with only 1 barley working drive.

So I need to know a few thanks before I even try to jump into this

1. Is it still worth modding a 7 year old xbox (for games and media center)?
2.Is XBMC still releasing a current build for the old xbox. (I have read there were not)
3.I will have to put normal DVD ROM drives in the xbox system I will not be able to run any stamped games. How much is that going to suck?
4.How will I mod the systems with only 1 drive that works when it wants to.

1. It most certainly is worth modding old xboxes, they are excellent media centres, though won't play certain HiDef formats, i find that they'll play movies up to 720p, though expect fast moving scenes to lag a little.
2. For XBMC i personally use these ~ http://t3ch.yi.se/ (i don't bother with the 'bleeding edge' builds, i run the Stable builds across all my xboxes).
3. I'm not au fait with DVD-Rom problems on xboxes, i do have one console with a dogy drive but i haven't got around to researching what's involved yet. I also don't know if normal DVD-Rom drives can be used.
4. see 3.

Ahmen to the creak mysters No-1: It most certainly is worth modding old xboxes

AID installer is now up to 4.5 & has an update pack to add to it v4.51, *coughs* tpb or btjunkie
http://www.aideluxe.com/index.php?title=AID_Manual_Chapter_1

As for the dvd rom drives do a web search the one that's sorta working may just need a laser clean or something,or just get two more dvd rom drives or an xbox that is working

EDIT: LMAO..just saw this

FlashFXP is crap, and far too many people have problems with it so please use FileZilla (free) instead of FlashFXP**

ring any bells creaky :p

I only didn't mention AID as it's mentioned in the one of the threads I'd already linked to above, and come to think of it there's the new fangled XBMC Installer Deluxe in the same link; nowadays i use AID just for the actual softmodding then the T3CH site for the actual XMBC side of things (in the past i did use AID for XBMC too).

Yeah that does ring a bell, FlashFXP is crap, Filezilla's infinitely better :)

The only issue i found with the AID disc is the partitioner doesn't format to 32bit the toggle function only gave 2 other options neither of which were any good as they both were 16bit as well

Yeah.. that's the problem with all the aid disks I have ever seen... but it's an easy thing to get over.. format the partitions again after creating them.. with xwizard or slayers2.6 .. it doesn't matter for E because that has to be a certain size anyway and isn't formatted to start with (otherwise the exploit dash would be killed)

Not really a big problem, just something to be aware of.
