Digivox XL USB Remote Control Problems

Hi, my Digivox XL USB does not seem to be picking up the remote control signal very well, takes an age to change the channel. Can anybody please advise how to fix this, have checked all the obvious things like batteries, platic film over the new receiver etc but no joy. Is there a suitable universal remote out there that I can buy? Thanks!
