Hi,
i have a DMBOX DM500V8 set up to use an old sky card
i now want to use a new sky card in it
rumour has it i have to change settings on it?
it was all set up for me last time so never had to do anything to get it working
does anyone know how to do this? im presuming its just a matter of going to settings somewhere and putting in my new details?
Thanks

when you say an old card i assume you mean a blue card in which case you also likely have an older version of cccam at the moment we have a white card ,install cccam 2.1.3 and set it as your default cam (your card will then work in the card slot )and pop your old cccam.cfg file into the new cccam using dream control center . cccam.cfg goes in to var/etc .

well, the actual situation is, i got the box off my uncle who doesnt have sky anymore
he only got rid of it recently, so he must have had the white card like i have now
he was saying that the card is pared to the device, and that i have to put in my card number, and number from my sky box?

its not the card number that is used its the boxkey (this is easily got by typing your sky box serial number in to boxkey convertor)if your uncle had a white card i assume he must have had cccam 2.1.3 installed (this is the lowest version you can use to open channels on a white card)pop your card into the box and if cccam 2.1.3 is installed all the basic pay channels will open . the boxkey is only required to open the movies and sports channels so if your package doesnt contain those channels you dont need the boxkey .

that sounds pretty good
is the boxkey converter a menu page somewhere on the box?
excuse my ignorance, i only found all this was even possible yesterday when i was given the box

you can set up a dm500c as a cable server but its not the same as what you do for satellite its a bit more complicated ,if your mate gets a dreambox and a satellite dish (and of course broadband is required) he can share with you if thats what you want .

if your just starting id recommend a dm500s (you should get one for under 80 euros new or even buy one second hand on ebay etc)you will need broadband and your box will need to be connected to it .once thats done you install cccam 2.1.3 using your dreambox remote control ,you dont say if you have your own card but i assume when you say what channels will i get that you have no card .
ideally you would have your own card and share with others to keep the cost down ,if you have no card you need either a friend/family member who is allready sharing to give you a c line or to sell you a share ,if this is not possible the only other option is to use a payserver .i dont use payservers myself nor do i advise that people use them but if you use a payserver you do so at your own risk .
a share can be purchased (this is called a c line )for about 135 euros a year .there is a benifit in having a satellite dish as opposed to cable in that there are a vast amount of free tv channels always available (you dont need any card for these channels)
you get bbc 1/2/3/4 ,itv 1/2/3/4 ,ch4/e4/more 4/ film 4 ,channel 5 ,cbs action /cbs reality/cbs drama ,true entertainment ,true movies ,the horror channel, movie channels etc ,there are lots of free kids channels and music channels ,news channels and shopping channels all free ,sadly there is not much in the way of sports but you can get the bbc red button sports free .

thats why its so cheap for a year. its all about risk, and indeed useless risk if you just make the effort to learn. as piopat says, its all at your own risk and it is not a risk that many senior members would recommend

shane if you put your card in the dreambox card slot the channels should open but only the basic pay channels, to open sky sports and sky movies you will need the sky box boxkey and that has to go into the cccam.cfg file .
if you click on the first link in my signature area you can download boxkey convertor (also download dream control center as you will need that to open the cccam.cfg file )on the back of your sky box there should be a sticker with a 17 digit serial number type that in to the boxkey convertor and it will give you your boxkey , write down your boxkey .
now you have to setup dream control center and use it to put the boxkey into cccam.cfg ,here are instructions from my tutorial
to edit cccam you open dream control center ,you need to set it up so it sees your network ,the first thing you see is a picture of a computer and to its right a picture of a dreambox ,we need to add a picture of a router to those pictures . so to the left of the picture of the computer you will see connection type and a few options like hub, crossover and router choose router by clicking on the word router ,now you should have 3 pictures.
below the picture of the router you will see search ,click on it and a box will appear ,on the top left corner of that box you will see search again click on it, dream control center is now searching for your routers ip address . when the search is complete you will see an ip address double click on it to accept it ,where it said search below the picture of the router it now has an ip address. go through the same process with the dreambox picture to find the dreambox ip address . when you have both ip addresses go the picture of the computer and click on reconnect ,all being well you should have a gree line going between all 3 pictures and a bit of text saying network ok .
now click on ftp in the bottom left of your screen , and you will see 2 boxes with files in them ,in the box on the left double click on var dir , then double click on etc dir , now you will see cccam.cfg single click on it to highlight it and the right click on it and you will see options like view, delete, edit etc click on edit and cccam.cfg will open .
you will see each line has a number (you can use any line you want in cccam.cfg but to make it easier for newbies i tell them to put their boxkey and c lines on specific lines in cccam.cfg) scroll to line number 317 and follow these instructions .
now scroll down to line number 317 and you will see #BOXKEY:/dev/sci0 00 11 22 33 (delete the # symbol at the start of the line ) and where you see 00 11 22 33 this is where you edit the numbers and put in your sly box boxkey . when you have put in your boxkey go to the top left of your screen and click on file and then click on exit and save . now reboot your dreambox (you need to reboot everytime you edit cccam ) all movies and sports channels should clear .

you would need a dreambox and so would your parents (you cant share with a sky box)also your parents card has to be working in that they have to be paying for the channels .if they arent paying for channels then the card is no longer active and if so it wont give any channels .your parents would also need broadband and their dreambox would need to be connected to it .
