How to flash a eurovox 1000 box (idiots guide welcome)

Hi all, I've been given a eurovox ex1000sl to sort out for a friend, however unlike my box I can not access the secret menu to update the codes. I've been through all the usual 1968 twice, menu then yellow or left etc but its having none of it.

The answer seems to be to 'flash' it and load new firmware? How is this done and what cable to I need to connect?

Help would be much appreiciated.
