Okay, so North East England finally had the N3 switchover and I'm dumping my now worthless original SV box.

After debating for many weeks whether to buy the SV6 or KV780 box, I've decided on the latter.

I've found a reseller for the KV on eBay selling for £160 including delivery, just wondering if anyone knew of any resellers listing these things for less.

Wait, what? You say "buy one from a reputable dealer", and then you tell me to PM some random guy on Facebook who sells them?

Why would I not buy one from eBay? The person selling is a top-rated seller, with 1518 positive reviews. Plus I'd be protected by eBay's buyer protection policy, and PayPal's payment protection scheme.

Whereas if I bought it from some random dude I get neither of those things.

Never mind, I'll buy from eBay. Was hoping there'd be some official stockists of these things like Starview has.

It's not that I "don't trust anyone". The point of my enquiry was to find out if there was an actual stockist with a real business address etc who stocks and sells these things from an actual company.

As far as I can tell, this "Iconnect" guy has absolutely no contact details listed anywhere on facebook or his website. No address, no contact telephone number, nothing.

It's all done through shady emails on a social networking site.

What is this "12 Month Guarantee" you speak of, hooter007? Does this Iconnect person offer a written seller's guarantee with his purchases? I find that hard to believe considering he doesn't operate out of any kind of legitimate business that I can see.

Or are you referring to the standard 12 month Warranty which is supplied with every electrical item sold in the UK (which, by the way, is immediately voided by modifying the firmware)?

If it's the latter, then yes. Not that it's much use for what I intend to use the Box for (which is the same, I imagine, as everyone else who bought it).

If I were to buy from "Iconnect", does he actually invoice me for the goods on PayPal, or is it just a case of sending him some money over PayPal, and he mails me the box?

PayPal's payment protection only covers an actual Checkout transaction, not money transfer.

He's even hidden his address and contact details from WHOIS, because he's not an official stockist or reseller. He's just a guy selling these things from his house or something.

How can you sit there and tell me he's a stockist and he can be trusted if he won't even give out his "business" (which doesn't actually exist) details?

How can he offer a "12 month Guarantee" if he's not even a registered trader?

I'm sure he does sell them, and I'm sure that they're fine, but he's certainly not a stockist, and he's certainly not obligated to replace a faulty box if I were to receive one from him.

Lol... "eBay team at VM"? What the hell are you talking about? There's nothing illegal about buying a FTA cable receiver. So no court in the world is going to make eBay give up my address. And even if VM turned up at my door (which they have before) they have no right to access my Home or check if the Box I'm using has been firmware modified to decode encrypted channels. So please, stop talking out of your arse.

The eBay seller is from http://www.dcreceivers.com, they are a reputable seller with over 1500 positive reviews on eBay. Plus they have their address and contact details listed on the website.

@e45; Saying PayPal is "safe as houses" just isn't true at all. PayPal's buyer protection from a non-eBay sale only lasts 45 days (let's not forget the eBay owns PayPal). Which means after a month and a half I'm on my own. And this only applies if it's an official sale through PayPal's checkout service, and not a money transfer, and only if the seller is a verified business or premier account holder, and not a personal account holder. Furthermore, the Warranty on the device starts from the day it's sold. If "Iconnect" is not an official reseller (which I suspect he's not), the warranty starts from the date he receives shipment from his supplier (who is the official reseller). If he then sells the product on, the warranty is worthless without original proof of purchase (which I won't have). And who knows how long he's had the boxes sitting around? They might only have 6 months left on the warranty.

This is, of course, forgetting about the fact that once the Firmware has been modified to decrypt encoded channels, the Manufacturer's Warranty is voided anyway. So it doesn't really matter if I buy it from eBay, facebook guy or an alien with 3 nipples... once the firmware is modded, that's it.

Thank you for your advice, chaps. I know you mean well, and I'm sure Iconnect is a stand-up fella who'll bend over backwards through hoops for you all 6 months down the line if your boxes develop a fault. However, I'm not interested in sending hundreds of pounds over the internet to someone who has no selling credentials whatsoever.

I'm "talking out of my arse" because I disagree with the advice that you've given me?

Advice is just that, advisory, I can take it or leave it. And when Advice comes from mis-informed individuals such as yourself and hooter007, where it's painfully obvious that you actually have no clue what you're talking about when it comes to distance-selling regulations or PayPal's buyer protection policies, then I'll go ahead and leave it.

I do, actually, know quite a lot about the subject matter. Having been employed as a distance-selling regulator for a well known fruit-based telecommunications company (go figure that one out yourself). So out of my arse is not, in fact, where I'm talking from.

For the record, I actually emailed Iconnect to enquire about what kind of guarantees he offered, and payment method he uses a couple of days ago, and I'm still waiting on a reply.

But anyway, the matter is resolved. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question, and even though I do disagree with you, I still appreciate the effort you've made.

http://dcrecievers.com is where I wound up purchasing the box from. £160 delivered, which is the same price that iConnect was offering his for (he eventually emailed me back), only these guys offer a proper warranty and have an actual returns policy.

You can buy them through eBay, or through their website by PayPal or direct purchase. I bought mine from their eBay listing simply because the appeals process is easier if something does go wrong. Not that I expect it will.

I had 2 PM's from people on this forum who said they'd bought their boxes from there with no issues, so I'm reasonably confident that they're above board.

@e45: Pot Kettle Black also comes to mind, considering you're the one peddling a guy on facebook. Are you on commission from this guy or something? Are you him? You seem to be taking the fact that I (and, indeed, mr zaib123 up there) don't want to trade with your godlike facebook seller rather personally.

Maybe it's just because you have your head so far up your own arse that you actually believe your own word is gospel. Who knows?

Anyway why are you still replying to my thread? We've established fully that you have nothing further constructive to add to the discussion. Your previous comments on the matter have been noted and taken into account (and subsequently ignored, but this is neither here nor there). Your little idiom isn't clever, and it smarts a bit of hypocrisy, and desperation, if I'm honest.

[Edit: zaib123, I'll drop you a PM when I get the box and let you know how the sale went. I'm not going to follow this thread any longer, as I feel it's reached it's conclusion now that I've made my decision.]

I seriously don't understand why everyone has such a problem with me not wanting to give £160 to a guy I don't know on Facebook.

I was looking for a real reseller, from a real company. And I found one on my own.

I thanked the people who took the time to give their advice, as it was appreciated. But I don't appreciate the snide little non-constructive comments from people who's advice I found to be hypocritical or flawed. Get over yourselves, it's nothing personal, I just don't want to trade with the guy.

Just because I came on here looking for advice it doesn't mean I have to follow it if I think the advice is bad. It would be rather stupid of me to blindly follow what someone told me without researching it first, wouldn't it?

Like hooter007 said; "buy from a reputable dealer". But I think our definition of "reputable" differs somewhat. After all, Reputation is not based on the individual, but the people evaluating that individual.

Having been a member of Afterdawn since 2007, I respected the opinion of most of the regular posters on this forum. I've always been impressed with the lengths people have been willing to go to help out people (e45, in fact, being a prime example of someone who has gone above and beyond to help people).

However, I can't help but feel a little disappointed in the reaction of these same people when someone finds their opinion or advice questionable. I would have hoped you'd all have respected my reasons for being weary of spending what I consider to be quite a lot of money on someone who is completely unknown to me and, as I pointed out in previous replies, has no selling credentials at all.

Rather than sympathising, you've decided to take the piss, or sprout off fabricated make-believe stories about VM's team of eBay stormtroopers who'll decend upon my house if I buy from eBay (okay, so I exaggerated a little, but the point remains the same).

I'll reiterate that I do appreciate the advice that you've given regarding iConnect. And like I've again said in a previous reply, I'm sure that my reservations about the guy will prove to be unfounded when one of you who have traded with him have a problem and he keeps to his word and fixes it.

However, personally, I would feel much better trading with an established, official business (which is what I was looking for when I posted this thread, and what I found on my own after doing so). And I would ask you to respect this, instead of bumping this thread with childish little comments.

@e45; I apologise for the comments directed at you in my previous replies. But after having a lot of respect for you before posting this thread, you really did reverse my opinion with your complete lack of regard for my reasons for not wanting to trade with iConnect. Instead of understanding and sympathising with my point, you decided to belittle me.

I have nothing against you, I do think you're a stand-up guy who does a lot for the scene on these boards. However, considering the fact that I do have a lot of knowledge in the particular subject of discussion (distance selling, warranties, buyer protection policies etc), I found in incredibly aggravating that you dismissed my explanation of the reasons behind why I didn't want to trade with iConnect as me "talking out of my arse", which invoked the reaction thus.

This will be my last post on the matter (I know I said that before, but people insisted on replying). I would appreciate it if you'd let this thread die.
