if i get a new a 780 do i load old software first then new or just go straight with the new software update

Always keep firmware up to date unless on rare occasion new update is causing problems, in
which case re-flash older firmware until update bugs are sorted out

When you first get your box you will have to use a null modem cable to flash the box first once done after that you can then just update your box with your remote from the comfort of your chair

Follow below for further updates after you flash your box for the first time.

menu >>>> Installation >>>>> 0000 >>>>>> S/W Update and then follow the instructions on the screen after it has finished and your box has rebooted.

DO a factory default on your box menu >>>> installation >>>> 0000 >>>> factory default then do a new scan which is advisable every-time you update your box.
