Hi all, looking to start this thread to encourage as much info as possible on this relatively new openbox.
I have one of these and am slightly impressed overall.
It is user friendly, quiet, seems fast enough, remote control a bit of a drag, but then thet all are.
This box is really easy to update firmware via usb.
The hd works well.
What i dont know yet is
Can it be used as a server as well as a client?
Cant seem to get it to record onto usb for some reason, although not bothered by that.
The wifi seems to be a touch difficult.
Have tried various up to date wifi dongles and although some show connected, they dont work particulary well.
havn't tried the "offical" wifi dongle.
Still not a tremedous lot of support yet for this box.
Overall
Considering the price (£26 to £60) not a bad deal
Please continue this thread and maybe generate support for this small delight.

I thought that, but I asked pple at sat shop and they said different.
I have searched the box and cant find any firmware or hidden menu to allow for serving.
But I had to ask.
Thanks

Can you tell me what wifi dongle you used, i have tried several different dongles, tried to connect usingwpa/wpa2/wep and the only one that works is wep.
But it wont unscramble anything even thought it says "connected".
Cheers

Hi, I have a few questions as its been a long time since I have been on this forum.
Firstly where is the best place to get one of these boxes?
Now without getting too complicated is it possible to use a sky dish with one of these?
Also any advice if this is better than a kryptview?
Thanks, I think that's it for now!

CCcam and MGcamd is already installed. All you do it go to Network and press 6666 or 8888. And the "hidden" menu will appear

Hi
Just a quick update to this thread, I have been using this box for a bit now and cannot find too many complaints about it.
the only quirky bits are the wifi and recording, seems to be firmware locked to certain wifi dongles and using various kinds of flash drives, I get "device speed too slow" when trying to record to them.
Apart from that, I use homeplugs and a good hd tv, all round a nice little inexpensive gadget for an end user.

The 4 digit PIN is 0000. You can change it from parental settings.

You can get them on EBAY. Yes you can use this with a sky dish. It has HD channels. Not sure Kryptview does the last time I checked.

Then use a different USB, could be a faulty one or one the box is not compatible with or the file is corrupt on the stick and the box doesnt recognize it

My apologies because I know NOTHING about these boxes. My daughter has bought one from a friend and it has every channel imaginable on it - which is great. But I believe this is what is called a gift subscription. So I assume at one point that will run out and she will only be able to get the free channels. Is there anything in the settings that shows how long the subscription is for?
And since it's connect to her router I assume there's no need for a dish?
And also, is it possible to record from it using an external hard drive. I would imagine that recording what you're watching should be ok but as I work nights, is there any way of setting it to record when I'm not there?
Thank you very much

The box connects to the router and the dish at same time to work.
You can record what you are watching but I do not think you can program it to record in your absence. There are other expensive boxes out there that do that.
Not possibly to see when your line will run out from the box. The line provider should be able to tell you. You need their details any way in case something goes wrong.

OK, thanks - so Could I use my Sky box with this, even if I cancel Sky? And the other more expensive boxes that record - do they do the same? ie a subscription to all channels etc? Can you recommend one?

YOu cant use two box on the same cable, you need another cable to run this and one to the sky box, look at the Blade boxs, HM9001, this box they all do the same more or less, you cant record and watch another chan at the same time, unless you are on the same freq or TP as they are called, you will need a dual tuner box such as the Amiko Alien 2, you can record and watch different chans, there are loads of posts on here covering and discussing them, tutorials on how to work them.
You need to pay to watch subscription chans using a share or CLINE, nothing is free

If your sky box is the latest one it will be dual turner and have two cables from the dish to it. You can use one cable for the Skybox F3 and the other one for your other box. How ever you will not still be able to watch one channel on the old box and record another. If you unsubscribe from sky you will not receive any channels on the original Skybox but your Skybox F3 will still work as long as you have a Cline in it.

It certainly is not for the faint hearted. If you are not technically biased better to get somebody who knows what he is doing and pay him to get you up and running.
