I see the new starview 6 is hitting shelves next week and is pretty similar to the HD model but receives standard def pictures only. 1 question though this box like the Later HD model has a lan socket that makes it "futureproof" what exactly does this mean? I gather with the rollout of Nag 3 the box will not work?

no box is fiture proof when it comes to using it to get paid channels free either via cable or via satelliite, as there is no fix for n3 this box will not be capable of unlocking the channels. the best bet to have a chance at future proofing may be the dreambox,as it is like a computer in its self and can be upgraded and new emus can be installed as the dreambox can be hooked up to the internet .lan means it can be hooked up to the internet for software updates etc,but with no n3 fix hooking it up will do no good unless you want to cardshare(in which case you need a linux box like dreambox, this box the starview 6 may be linux if it has a lan connector)technology changes so fast and often these days(even more so it seems when it comes to these boxes) that it would be very hard to say that anything is truly future proof.

Doesn't the HD combo have a LAN port also and wasn't there some supplier pre-configuring them and selling them set up for c/s from their own private servers. Don't know if it was for c/s sat or cable though. Think I read that here somewhere.
Oh and I severely doubt that will last long!

The price is £159.99 Even though i'm not going to get 1 surely it would make more sense to invest in the HD combo model for only £35 more. With the roll out of nag 3 I think starview may have shot themselves in the foot launching this now especially at that price.
THE NEW STARVIEW 6 USB LAN
The Best Standard definition Starview yet now based on the same menu as the
HD version it is faster more reliable and has the added bonus of the new
future proofing LAN port.

The Starview 6 is a satellite receiver!!!
You cannot just purchase it and plug it in like the boxes before nag3.
The lan port is so you can connect the box to the internet which is required if you want to get your channels back.
You will also have to pay a subscription fee to a website for them to allow you to receive the channels.
Basically how this works is there is someone who has a sky box with all channels and they connect it to the internet and share the channels with everyone but they charge for this. Then you have to have a wire running from the box to your router or use power line communications to send the ethernet signal.
This is illegal!!! and there is no guarantee how long these websites will last.
Also if you do go to the bother of buying a box with a lan port you will also need a satellite dish aimed at the Astra satellite.
This is no "plug and play" system like before nag3.
You have to research this before buying.
I sincerely hope topgear88 has done his research before buying the new Starview 6.
I emphasise once again this is illegal!
Mods please note that I hope I havent broken the rules by explaining this!If so I apologise and will remove this post immeidiately.

I was talking about people in Ireland on my post before and if you're in Ireland and expecting cable box to get you all your channels you're in for a suprise. Not entirely sure of the situation in the UK at the moment so if you'r in the UK I sincerely hope the Starview 6 works for you.
And coolcrab, if you think I don't know what I'm talking about then you're the "muppet".

Shanno06, i think you really need to read further. You have one version of the story and what you say is correct. But your viewpoint is not complete. You need to research further.

This box includes access to a C/S server for N3 Ireland, not UK. I guess you can connect to any C/S server, but as the Irish server is included in the price, there is no point in getting one in the UK as you are paying for something that you cannot use.
BTW, some people do refer to C/S as the N3 hack.
I've moved this thread to the starview section.

hmm, I wonder how long that will work for.
Its ok as long as boxes are being sold to support the server but what happens once the market is saturated. Who's going to maintain the subscriptions ?
For Ireland, I think there's somwhere close to 20 transponders so thats likely to be 20 subs required. Plus, the NTL areas will likely still have different card info to the Chorus areas so that could be another 20 subs required.
Dunno what the price of a sub is in Ireland but lets say they average out at 50Euro each (A lot of the cards wont need to be full sub) so thats 40 * 50 = 2000Euro a month just to maintain the subs. If its done properly then you really should double up on cards to prevent certain forms of attack so that could potentially be 4000Euro a month
So, where's that money going to come from once box sales start to drop off ?
the thing hasnt even launched and youve given away a lot of info... please keep it shtum mate.
oh no too late.... :(
