I have a downloaded a "Win Rar" 25 part file. When I right click on
Part 01 there is NO Extract..

The Part 01 file has a yellow arrow in the winrar icon and the
properties say --- application.

Could this be a hidden virus that's not showing up in my scan?

Can I extract this or is it possibly a malware program?

Do you have
"hide extensions for known file types" deselected?
If not you should have. You'll find it in control panel/
folder options.
Once you've established it's actually an archive,
(typically extensions 7z, zip,rar, etc) doubleclick on the
part01 and see if you can extract it from within the
utility.

Hi,

I now have "hide extensions for known file types" deselected and part 01 now shows an exe. file but does not have an extract with a right click. Double clicking doesn't work, simply get an error.

I'am not at all comfortable with this file, thinking it might be malware or a hidden virus that my system hasn't detected.

I'm now more concerned about what it is so that I can "Post" the results and warn other people.

You would think that if it's a virus it would be simple to open!

Hi,

Did a checking from the link I got the file and found other people asking about the file. It is indeed a "Trojan" - what a surprise!

Also, it's a exe. file as I stated. My thought is that it's a 32 bit exe. and I'm using XP - 64 bit and mine won't open it.

Anyway, it looks like everyone now knows not to go after the file and that was my goal.

Sorry to hear it, hope you can clear your machine.

If you want a 2nd opinion, visit http://www.virustotal.com/
and submit he file.

In my mind, it's always safer to see the files extensions,
do not understand why the Windows default is to not show it.

Hi,

Thank you, but I did not, thankfully, get a virus. After seeing the exe. I was concerned and avoided getting anything. I just wanted to warn others.

It would be nice if Windows defaulted to "See the file ext."

I can tell you how to extract it to find out exactly what it contains (here comes some more of my strange and arcane know-how)

Open a command prompt window and navigate to the directory with the file in it..

then..

filename.exe -a -pc:\<path you want it to extract to> *example* D:\virus\files\

That will rip it apart and allow you to see what you really have.

Hi,

Thanks for the help, but I've already deleted the files.

I'll keep your thread as I'm sure there will be more as I've seen
this type of Rar file before.
