How to capture mini-dv tapes shot on a Canon XH A1?

I have about 5 mini-dv tapes that were shot on a Canon XH A1. I don't have an XH A1, but I do have an old Canon ZR 80 which hand-held mini-dv camcorder with firewire.

I thought I could use it to capture these tapes, but it doesn't seem to be working. Am I doing something wrong, or is will the ZR 80 simply not read the tapes shot by the XH A1?

If the latter is the case, what is the cheapest option for me to be able to capture these kinds of tapes? Is there some kind of a mini-dv deck that would do the trick which doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
