Out of Sync Audio on High Resolution VHS to AVI

I am trying to convert my VHS collection to DVD. I am new to the process and have learned much. I have successfully saved one macrovison protected exercise video as an AVI file with no sync problems. I was not satisfied with the video quality so I experimented by using a higher resolution setting. SInce I am new to the terms, please bare with me.

The first successful copy was made with the suggested resolution of 320x240 (I may not remember the number correctly). The experiment to enhance the video quality was made with a resolution exactly double that of my first attempt. The resulting Video was very good, but the audio was out of sync! I am wondering what I could do to get the highest quality video while syncing the audio. Since I am new at this I am wondering if it is even possible to sync audio to this high resolution.

I have a Hauppage WInTvGo 878 capture card and am using the AMPAD software for capture (I was not able to use VirtualDub due to the macrovision protection). Sound is Realtek Integrated HD audio on my XFX MB. The audio is the Line In.

Thanks for your input. FYI I did try a search (before posting) but could not find anything directly related to my circumstance.

First, try AviMuxGUI.

Drag your AVI file into the top pane, highlight it and select "generate data".
In the lower pane highlight the audio and if anything other than 0 (zero) appears to the right in the delay box, select "start" and output a new file.

Have you suggested using a video filter like grex or sima or it's not an option?

The video filter is probably a good idea. Most sync issues are caused by dropped video frames, and cannot be corrected. Be sure you're not dropping frames.
