I don't know if I've posted this to the correct forum if not please can the admin move it to the appropriate one.

I have a couple of VHS tapes of my family which I would like to transfer to DVD disc, I know I could take them to a shop to have it done but I'm scared of letting the videos out of my sight as the video film is of family no longer here.

I have a DVD burner on my pc, but don't have a DVD recorder. I'm not sure if this is what I can use to do this task.
Ideally I'd like to be able to save the VHS film to my hard drive so that I can edit it if needs be, then burn it to DVD.
If that's too complicated a straight forward copy from VHS to DVD would be fine.

I am a complete novice in this kind of thing, I would very much appreciate help with this.

TIA

When I backed up my tapes I used a standalone DVD Recorder.
I recorded to DVD-RW and edited them on the PC before burning to DVD-R.

Thanks for your reply. I'm going to buy a second hand DVD recorder.

Do you know what leads I'll need to connect from the VCR to the DVD recorder? Can I use just a scart lead?

Thanks.

Scart isn't used in North America - so I can't offer an opinion.
If it supplies video and audio I expect it will work.

I have not used this but Roxio does have a product for $50. It comes with an adapter that has inputs for audio/video cables and the other end has usb for your computer.

There also is a mac version http://www.walmart.com/ip/Roxio-Easy-VHS-To-DVD-For-Mac/12321751
