Neverending Conversion. Please Help!!

I have some DivX movies of a series I'm trying to convert so that they fit my TV screen when I burn them on DVD (subtitles halfway off the bottom). I've tried using several programs, including vegas video, tmpgenc, and I can't remember the other one, but anyway, when I try to convert them, the program (no matter what I use) takes forever.

I started trying to convert the first couple episodes, and the first one converts fine, then the second episode was trying to convert for just shy of two days, as in like 45 hours with little or no progress. I am able to watch these files on my computer, so I don't think there's anything wrong with them. I get no errors, but also no results. Any insight into my problem would be appreciated.
