I have tried to join two similar AVI files using virtualdub but when I try to open the files to join the message 'couldn't locate format for MP43...virtualdub requires a VFW compatible codec...' despite me installing ffdshow and divx v5.4.1. and other codecs. Any suggestions?

Nope, no idea. Can you convert them to MPEG-1 with TMPGEnc and after File__Mpeg Tools__Merge & Cut?
