the DVD encoded with TMPGEnc from an avi is noticeably darker than the original.

is there any setting I can use to fix this?

Advanced tab, simple color correction.

is there any place on the web (the TMPGEnc site doesn't offer any help, as far as I can see) that details all the options in TMPGEnc?

for example, right now I'm using CQ_VBR as the encodingmethod.
is this better or worse than CQ, or CBR?

in the CQ or CQ_VBR settings, is it better to have the max bitrate high (at 8000) and put quality at 50% or put quality at 100% and have max bitrate at 5000?
(trying to fit file on one DVD+R)

is there any way to accurately estimate the resulting file size for a certain method?

right now I choose a bright "action" sequence in the film, encode a couple of minutes and do a linear approximation, by hand, but I'd like a better way.

CQ_VBR is fine for most encodes, unless the source is lousy, then use 2 pass VBR. Beware this will at least double the encoding time.
You need a bitrate calculator for max, min, and average. http://www.dvdrhelp.com/calc.htm
There's no better way to check output quality, than your own eyes.

try QuEnc 0.59 beta2
you can find it at the software section.

now constant quantizer mode available.
just use quant 2.

save you the worry of tmpg CQ :)

but there's no onboard filter, so you have to learn avisynth.
