Dang it. I have a v7 with the USB 1.1 port (getting the software today I believe). I can't see how it would be slower than the DVD drive itself. USB 1.1 can transfer up to 12 MB/sec, whereas a 4x DVD drive does about 5 MB/sec. I transferred some games over to the HDD last night with no problems (although they were both almost the same size but one took 4 minutes while the other took 15). There has to be some settings we are missing because some love it and some hate it. All the reviews state they don't have problems and I can't see how they would say it is compatible with all versions if the game play is diminished.

i wish i had an answer for you man. im pretty sure that mine is a v7 too. i have tried a 40gb notebook HD w/ a 16mb buffer, a 10 gig fujitsu (that totally sucked) and a maxtor ata133 7200 rpm special edition w/ a 8mb buffer and it sucked too. my biggest problem is compatability. I havent given up, i really hope it works but they gotta do something fast.

USB 1.1 is 12 Mb not 12 MB. the non-capital b means bits instead of bytes. 12Mb is equal to 1.5MB, so USB 1.1 is slow.

I have USB extreme and as far as speed goes, it seems pretty fast. I'd say it has equal load times to the DVD. I'm using a slim PS2, but I dunno if it has USB 1.1 or 2.0.

Oh, and the compatability sucks, I've tried 4 games so far and only 1 works and 1 other one halfway works but locks up at all the videos.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing.

I don't think the problem is the s/w but the ps2 model. The usb port is more advance on the new ps2's and i believe this might be contributing to my success!

I don't...but after the past experiences of other users that's the only logical reason that these lags time to upload a game are so poor. As far as load times as well it seems something isn't working properly, incompatibility issues, i don't know. Quality of video or game fps rates i don't know. I'm not bragging about having success i'm only trying to help. I am actually waiting on a new hdd this one has 10000rpm hope this makes things even better...but i doubt it...may just use it on my pc.

yeah plan on using it for your pc. it will just go to waste on the ps2. it would be like dropping a chevy longblock engine on a plastic tricycle. usb is a strict protocol either its 1.1 or 2.0 thats it period. no ps2 has 2.0 usb only 1.1. there is no way to upgrade the ports or utilize software to increase speed. The speed is tied to the hardware unless someone can do this using the firewire port that is on the front of the older ps2s your stuck w/ 1.1 period.

OH SO POINT BLANK... turtle thanks for the advice...

Primitive.. since you're the only one who seems to have fortunate success with this, has the USB extreme been compatible with all of your games? and could other users be doing somethin wrong that would cause them to dislike it so much in regards to fmv sequences and compatibility? u think they aren't just doing anything right? hey turtle...y do u think your games aren't being compatible? mean, u think you're setting up anything wrong? if primitive is having soo much success then u think somethin isn't properly configured?

Hey listen, i'm nothing, and you're nothing, so lets just keep it like that, k?

I'm not saying that everybody is doing everything wrong. I am using my 120gb Maxtor Ide 7200rpm hdd, with the same software as everybody else. Maybe it's the way your copying games or transfering them to the hdd....what r u guys doing and using as far as ripping the games?

ive been up, down and side to side on this. ive tried the win and command line versions of the software. Ive tried different PC's different cables and different HD's I have 4 PC's in my house and they all work perfectly. so i have troubleshot this over and over again and the only thing i can point my finger at is a crappy product.

It would be interesting to find out if only games higher than a certain size (i.e. larger than 2GB) are causing problems. From what I have heard, the Punisher works fine (1.8), but some other games that are larger freeze up. I am wondering if we would have to shrink the games by getting "rid" of the dummy files or by using ISOBuster and then re-creating the ISO (for those files with False [something - can't remember the term]). I should be getting the USBExtreme shortly. I don't play a lot of the huge resource games though.

well...

a couple things splurged in my head when i heard about this product.. It seems as if even the designers of the USB extreme software are suppressing the performance of this product. I've searched on their site.... the specs of the thing aren't exuding any facts about the performance..they have forums as well. but its only for Hddadvance...

So.. i'm stooped knowing that PS2 usb ports are a poor speeds as well...compared to firewire PCI and USB 2.0

As far as copying, i'll try the command line and software versions of this, but i always thought that if u needed to copy a copy a game onto the USB Hdd, then just either create an iso of the game, drap n drop it onto the device or something...same with a downloaded iso.

Peace

not unless they need to be converted to a special format in order to play them.

But then again if thats the case then maybe another software can convert to the needed format.

From the files on the external hard drive after copying, it looks like it just busts the iso into the .000, .001, .002, etc files and has one .cfg file that is sort of like a table of contents (menu) that has the name you assigned (that you would probably see on the menu) and the first file (.000) of the SLUS_XXX.XX that points to what game you are referring to. I know there are many games that can be "compressed" simply by either using ISOBuster and then re-compiling the image or if you take the DUMMY.FIL (or whatever, there are about three different types) and creating an empty .txt file with the same name to replace it. StarWars Battlefronts for example goes from 3GB+ down to 1.8! This is what people advise to do when using the slide card to speed up processing/load times. I don't know what my largest game is, but maybe compressing any games as much as possible will load faster?

Step-by-step for "shrinking". Haven't tried this yet though, but I have 007-Everything or Nothing and it says it should shrink it. When it mentions "FALSE _____" I think the second link I have attached will work for these scenarios as well (as for StarWars Battlefronts). Second one is easier and the site has all of the necessary programs to download (ISO Buster, etc). I use MS-DOS to recompile the .000, .001, etc into the ISO:

http://www.ps2hd.com/forums/faq.php?faq=dvdshrink#faq_shrink004

SECOND LINK - Cant find the website. I have it saved on my computer at home. If I find it while surfing at work today I will post it. It is a step by step on how to use CDVDGEN and ISO Buster. This method should work and sounds easier for those games with the FALSE ____, but as for the dummy files you should read the above link.

The great thing about it is that i really do! For nortel networks...i just wanna try this because of the new hdd that i got coming i want it to work with the ps2....cause my pc is already loaded, i guess it won't hurt to have a 10,000rpm hdd.

how exactly would you embark on something as picky as a sony board though? its not like youre building it from the ground up. you would have to find a usb controller chip that the ps2 would recogize. not to mention removing the old chip and putting a new one in its place.
good luck with that. when youre done im sure theres a spot waiting for you at nasa.

This is just a thought, but has anyone tryed Winhiip after the USB drive is formatted, so instead of using the DOS or Win tools it maybe faster to load games or even make a better partition??...these are all thoughs which I cant test out.

I dont know if it will help or not.

well the problem isnt really getting the games onto the drive. it just getting them to work off the ps2. i dont know if that would help but someone should try it.
