Just today my PS2 cd tray will not remain closed unless I press the close button and shut the game system off. I have called the toll free number and didn't receive much help so now I am here to see if anyone else has had the same problem that can offer me some advice on how to fix it.

simple fix possibly is this..i had that problem before..All it was, was the eject button was alittle sticky from food, or what ever i might have had on my fingers from turning the system on and off..i open it up and cleaned all the button..boom..worked fine after that..but that was my fix,might not be for you ..but you could try.

I am also having this same exact problem
i have opened the case and cleaned everything
Its not stuck on anything its fine ...almost seems like the
sensor that tells it when its shut is broken?
Anyone else have any other suggestions?
I have a flip-top case ...so i dont even need to ever open
the drive. So is there a way i could just cut a cable or break
a sensor so that it wont open or close aga

try cleaning your drive with a CD cleaner and see if you still have the same problem.

There is most likely a way to disable the CD tray from opening. I'm pretty sure that the tray is opened by a "rack and pinion" sort of device, which consists of a motor, a gear attached to the extruding drive shaft, and then a simple row of teeth on the tray in which the gear sits to open and shut the tray. Knowing that, you have a few ways to disable the motor. I would suggest that you disable the entire motor instead of removing something like the gear, as it will save you trouble in the future I'm sure.
For the rest of you, crack the case at your own risk. If you can't fix it, Sony is still going to disown you.

Yes that would disable the drive. But it seems the problem is that the ps2 wont even bother reading the disc until it is settled and done trying to close the drive. Like say the ps2 is off everything is normal, I turn it on right away the eject button will flash and the drive will open on its own. If you shut it it opens again, it will cycle this 3 times and then go back in and go into some sort of "sleep mode". But if you try to do anythign after that it will wake back up and open again. If i were to just disable to gears i think it would still be trying to open itself. I need to somehow find where the sensor that tells the ps2 if its drive is open or shut and disable that. Thanks for the feedback though i appriciate it!

Ahh that's a little better description of whats going on. Now we're getting into solid state circuitry and I don't know much about that as it relates to a PS2. Since you've already voided your warrenty with the casemod, I'm fresh out of ideas. Sorry.

It could be that your tray has gone out of alignment. You know when your tray is open an you can push it closed and tray will be taken in on its own... The gears can sense when they are being bumped. What might be happening is that your tray has slipped a few gears back. When the tray is taken in by the PS2, the mis alignment is causing the tray to hit the inside of the drive causing it to be kicked back out. Basically, the drive thinks there is something in the way. This is actually pretty easy to fix and you'll only need to remove a few screws.
Remove the top half of your PS2 and then take off the cover from the disc drive. There will be two screws on the side of the tray that you have to unscrew. You can then lift up the unscrewed side. The other side will stay secured, but will pivot.
You then need to set the gears on the drive to the closed position. If you have seen how a slide card works, it is very similar. There is a white piece of plasic that is visible when the tray is lifted. It is about 1 cm in width and runs across the front of the drive. You can slide this piece of plastic from left to right. I'm not sure, but i think if it is all the way to the left, that is the closed position. Once it is set, put the drive tray back down and screw it back in as far back as it will sit, or where you can see the front of the tray flush with the front of the PS2. Screw it down and test it out with the cover still off.

The tray on mine seems normal in every aspect...goes in all the way...stays flush with the sides...doesnt rub or touch anything...
Its almost as if the sensor that tells it when its closed is shorted out or something...the gears are all aligned and working correctly...
Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a sensor that tells the motherboard when the tray is closed or open? Or even if there is a way to completely disable the drive from opening or closing ever!...As i have a flip-top so have no need for the tray to eject...
Any help is greatly apprciated as always..

He's already got one. A fliptop doesn't disable the drive from still working.

puffdank, there is no sensor that tells the ps2 the drive is opened or closed, the switch sends information to the drive IC and it tells the mobo, then it goes on to read the disk, thats what the eject button is for, i think you mentioned that you cleaned the buttons, what the problem might be is the switch might be warn out, press the reset button and see if it makes the same sound as the power buttom, if it is easy and loose to press in it means you need to replace the power and eject button, check the power button to, my mate had the same problem, he had a v1 ps2 and when he put it on it would just keep ejecting automatically, his reset switch was faulty, so i removed it and soldered another on for him, after that everything was great.

I dont think you should just go ahead and buy the power/eject button straight away, open up your ps2 and check the ribbon cable that goes to the motherboard from the buttons, does it look okay or os it damaged or ripped from somewhere, if its okay then take the reset and eject button thing of the lid of the PS2, then remove the ribbin cable and then remove the screw which is inbetween the two buttons, it will reveal the PCB, that has the switches and leds on it, get a multimeter and check to see if the switch shorts without being pressed, if it doesnt, it can still be the power and eject buttons where the problem is, so you might just have to buy another Reset and power switch, but i cant promise 100% that it is the problem. If you want to buy the switch, then you will have to go to a PS2 repair shop and ask if they sell them, or buy it online:

Ok thanx for the help mate...
I noticed that the ribbon does have a hole punctured threw it...could that also be the reason? Is there a way to take the ribbon from another ps2 to check or are the ribbons not able to be unplugged and plugged back in? I appriciate the help

your welcome puffdank,yes i am 100% sure that the hole is the reason, the cable must have been in the way, when you were screwing your ps2 shut so now the cable has been damged and is shorting at the same time, you will have to replace the ribbon cable, that will sort out your problem.

After 2 weeks of waiting and $13.xx U.S. plugged in new cable today and still have the problem....I am fresh out of idea's on what could be causing this to keep reseting...I got mad and ripped out the reset/eject cable completely and the tray was still ejecting lol. So it has nothing to do w/ the cable. There has to be some sort of sensor/switch/plug that actually gives the tray the power to open and close. Thnx for the suggestion waleedwc I do appriciate the help -=] .... any other suggestions?

Hmmm, sorry about that, but dont worry it isnt the end of the world, and i will try to help u sort the problem out.
First of all it might be that the cd tray is a bit dislodged, so when you turn the ps2 on, the tray has been pushed in a little bit when it was in the open position so it is off the track, i dont currently have a bulky PS2 so i cant tell you directly, but i can help you fix this problem, all you need to do is take a picture of the DVD drive from a close view with the cover of the drive removed and the tray out. You can upload the image to photobucket.com and add the link up here. If you cant get a picture taken let me know i will try and get one of someone.

Yah that was my first assumption ...
so i took it off the track and reset it.....so i dont believe thats what is causing it...what exactally do you mean about the picture....just take a close up picture of the tray when its out?
