There are some products that use the USB port to transfer saves, but there is a sort of free way to do this. Why I say sort of is because if you already have an HDD for your PS2, you can transfer game saves through a Local Area Connection (LAN). And theres a way to use a USB pen drive with free software made by people in the PS2 Community that should let you transfer saves to the pen drive, then taking it out and putting it in the USB slot of your PC to put the saves on your computer (or just keep the saves on the pen drive)

If you already have an HDD and have (or can have) a LAN, then this should help you:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/122897

If you want to buy a product that can use USB to transfer saves, the ARMAX EVO is said to be good for this, it comes with a pen drive and has many other features. I did a search on pricegrabber.com and found the best sale and the site is a featured merchant of pricegrabber.com:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?categoryid=cat08187&id=10...
I've heard that this is the easiest way, with ARMAX EVO.

One question though, do you have any type of mod? Like a modchip or Swap Magic?

I'm not sure about in-game saving to a USB flash drive, but I know you can transfer your saves to a USB flash drive. First off though, what kind of mod chip do you have?

@ Stefan001
Excellent mod chip you got! I've heard you can do a lot with that. If you want, you can make a CD or DVD with a bunch of homebrew apps on it, and the MI should help play it. Check your PM

Thanks I got it for an amazing price! I will look into my PM/MI. But what is? homebrew apps? MI? PM? how can I control it?

Dudes, you all got it wrong, hes asking if theres any way to use a computer hard drive to store the saves with a wire connecting from the ps2 to the PC. Hes not asking about how you can transfer saves. But since you all ask, heres a way which doesnt involve any pen drives or AR MAX EVO

Alot of people don't know this but it is possible to put PS2 saves onto a normal CD and playing it on your ps2 so that it you can save it on your ps2's own Memory Card. I am posting this topic now to tell this guide again. There are a number of ways of booting a CDR on the PS2 and you will need access to a PS2 with backup booting capabilities

Requirements
CDGENPS2 ---> http://www.richpsx.com/playstation2/utilities/cdgenps2v2.zip
Blank CD-/+R
PS2MENU--->http://ps2dev.org/kb.x?T=1015
PS2 Save Builder--->http://www.ps2savetools.com/download.php?op=getit&lid=74
PS2 Memory Card (Any Brand)

METHOD

Step 1 - Getting your GameSave

Make sure you download the save you want for the specific game you want to get the game for, also make sure its the same region as the game disc. You can find most game saves at,

http://www.gamefaqs.com

Also If you Want to Update Your Action Replay Max, than you can download that file here.

Europe Code = http://uk.codejunkies.com/support_article_detail.asp?c=GB&cr=GBP&...

USA Codes = http://us.codejunkies.com/support_article_detail.asp?c=US&cr=USD&...

Step 2 - Converting The Save To NPO

Extract all the programs (PS2 Builder,CDGENPS2, etc) by winRAR, into a folder on your harddrive. Than open PS2 Save Builder, than open the save game file you downloaded.

Now click File then Save as and select the save type as NPort(*.npo) and click Save (Choose a place where you remember where you saved it too)

You will have to do this for every game save you want to upload. You can put as many game saves that will fit onto a CDR (700Mb). You can upload as many as you want that will fit into your memory card.

Step 3 - Making Your Image

First you need to create a SYSTEM.CNF;

BOOT2 = cdrom0:\PS2MENU.ELF;1
VER = 1.10
VMODE = NTSC

Copy the above text to notepad and save it as SYSTEM.CNF. Open CDGENPS2 and a window browsing your folder of ps2 saves. Drag the following files from your folder to CDGENPS2 in the following order; SEE PICTURE

To fix the lba right click on a file and click edit. Then check the ?fix lba? box and type the lba. The DUMMY file is there as I am only uploading one npo. This will increase the TOC of my disc and prevent the PS2 from screeching when it boots up. Remember the pic below shows an example. You will need to drag your npo file here instead or as many npos as you like.

To save the image click the IMG button on the left and then choose a name for your BIN/CUE image. (Doesn't matter what name, again save to a folder which you will know)

Step 4 - Burning Your Image

There exists a huge variety of burning software that can be used. If you use NERO, ALCOHOL 120% or Record Now DX, then they would work. In this guide I will use NERO.

Open Nero Burning ROM and click Recorder then Burn Image;

Select your CUE file and then click burn.

Step 5 - Uploading The Files from the CD to the PS2 Memory Card

To upload the game save boot the CD you just created on your PS2. It Will Show a black screen with writing. Let it load until it shows a grey screen as seen in the picture. The following menu will load showing the contents of your MC;

Press R1 and this menu appears;

Move down to cdfs as shown and press x. The contents of the CD will now show. Move to your selected npo save and press Triangle on it. (To know which is which, go back to your computer and find out which it is by using PS2 Save Builder)

The npo will now extract to your Memory Card. The program tells you when it is finished, only takes couple of seconds.

Thank You for Reading this guide. This guide was based on this site on wanado, but i don't actually knew who made it. Credit to that site for the pictures also.

Peace Out,

3dluis

Nice guide....but I'm curious about the pen drive question. Can you actually use it instead of a memory card? Don't want to transfer, just save.

OK so I read it wrong, I was a bit tired. And since I'm wide awake, Stefan001, you don't need a HDD, you need a Network Adapter to transfer saves through LAN, sorry I didn't see that earlier. And sorry I didn't say anything about the USB link cable.

In your first paragraph, 3dluis, you said
Quote:
hes asking if theres any way to use a computer hard drive to store the saves with a wire connecting from the ps2 to the PC. Hes not asking about how you can transfer saves.
So you think Stefan001 just wants to know if its possible and thats it? I think Stefan001 wants to know if its possible and, if yes, how to do it. One more thing, storing file(s), in this case, involves transfering. BTW, CD+R is EXTINCT, and we didn't ask for what you posted, sorry dude. And I doubt Stefan001 wants to use a blank CD-R. Isn't that method used to put downloaded game saves onto your memory card?

I'm not sure about in-game saving to a USB flash drive, that'd be cool though. I don't see why not. I'm about to get my PS2 chipped with a DMS4PRO so maybe it's possible with that.

@ BadBone
Did you mean DVD-R backups?
