DRE's are normally caused when the DVD drive laser is dirty, and needs to be cleaned, and also a dying out laser causes the same problem.
Swap Magic is not really the cause to the problem, using bad quality media in your PS2 stresses the Laser and it stops working correctly, but i suggest you open up your PS2 and clean the Laser,

well, a few days ago i bougth Swap Magic and after i played a few minutes with my back up game stop to read the disk, i restarted the console and after that dontload any game also the original games, investigating a little bit i found some version of PS2 have a desing problem with the LA6508 IC, so if your console stop to working suddendly its probably the LA6508 have problems, in some sites sell that IC with a protection circuit and prevent happend again. That ic its the driver of the lens and the motor lens, is your PS2 dont load nothing its better you try to change this IC by the way its more cheaper tha a lens.

Yes, marycar81 is making a very good point, if you have a SCPH-5x00x PS2 then in can be the problem, you will have to buy the LA6508 CD/DVD motor driver chip, you will need to solder it on your motherboard, using a 15w or lower soldering iron.

@oni123, what version PS2 do you have, if it is a SCPH-5x00x then i will tell you how to test the lens coils to see if they are okay, if they are then you will have to purchase this chip.

If the resistance is low then you need to get a new laser and a chip.
