Hey everyone. I am very new to ps2 modding. I have spent many hours reading countless threads on this forum. Everyone here appears very friendly and extremely knowledgable. Also, I tried to find anything that could assist my problem before I posted and with no success, I decided to post this.

So with the introductions out of the way, onto the problems at hand! :D

I own a PsTwo (slimline) I think it's version 12, however im not exactly sure. The reason being is that the Serial number is SCPH-70011, but it came in a white box.

And I am under the impression that all v12 come in a yellow box.

Both pictures are from www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm (Im not sure if that is classified as advertising, but im putting it here to see if its a credible web site, which is cause for concern as to the version of my pstwo.)

The reason that I am even concerned of my pstwo's version is that I'm worried about it's laser. I've heard that the v12 laser is terrible and burns out really easily. Also, that there are many laser protection items available.

However, it seems that only people using an actual mod-chip are concerned with laser problems.
- I'm using Swap Magic v3.6 and Magic Tools (the no-solder mod).
- The type of media I am using is Verbatim DVD-R, MCC ink.
- I'm Burning with Dvd-Decrypter @ 4xspeed.

I've backed up 2 games so far, Area-51 and Dbz Tenkaichi both work perfect, and no coasters.

Nero CD/DVD Speed gave me this after scanning my back-up of Tenkaichi

So I was wondering if I need to concern myself with laser problems, and my laser dying? Or can I continue to play/back-up my games without worry.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

Although it is a newer version, I've heard things like the internal fans are terrible, (due to its smaller size) as well a burned laser. That the v13 and v14 have laser burn protection installed in the factory, where the v12 did not.

Does a broken laser only happen on pstwo's with a mod-chip because of extra stress put on the laser? or in the event crappy media is used, and strains the laser to read it? Heh, so many questions :(

If so, then I think it just might be better to play my original disks, because buying the game again is cheaper than a new laser...

Thank you for answering, hope to hear other information you have to offer, as well as others on this forum! =D

No problem, your right it could just be that your PS2 is modded try playing normal games for a while or if you have spare cash lying around by a new PS2 and don't mod it and play normal games then maybe your PS2 will last as long as mine

hey, I may not have been clear enough :( sorry.

My pstwo is still perfectly fine. However I'm worried about it becoming broken with the dreaded v12 laser problem. The only "modification" I've made is Magic Tools. The 3 little pieces of plastic that trick it into thinking the lid is closed. Other than that its just Swap Magic 3.6 plus.

On a different thread someone mentioned that using quality burned disks for back-ups may actually prolong the life of the laser.

I'm getting somewhat conflicting messages as to the issue of a dead laser.

Also, I dont (unfortunately) have any spare cash around, so having to dish out $200 more for a new ps2, when ps3 is right around the corner would be devistating.

I was just wondering, (with the information mentioned above) if my v12 pstwo has a high risk of a broken laser, or should I continue playing my back-ups worry free.

Thanks for any replys. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!

V12are known for weal lasers, but i would not spend all your time
worrying about it.
If you really want peice of mind then get a PROFESSIONAL to
instal a laser fix, they cost abot $10 tops
Comsoft V4 and Summone are the two i know about.
Most people with chips and v12's HAVE to get them. The chip adds extra
heat and suck to the problem which cand really cause the laser to
go out on you.
But i am sure there are plenty of v12's out there with no laser fix
that run just fine.

Alright, thank you!

It's been a couple of weeks now, and I have almost all of my games backed-up. All giving roughly a score of 98 from Nero cd/dvd speed, and running perfectly, with no sound problems or read errors. Also, I put a fan next to it to reduce heating.

Everything is running 100%. I will also look into a laser fix though if I notice the slightest of problems. Thanks!
