I assume your using HDadvance? then you have to start up the server by holding down any button on your controller before the HDAdvance Boot up screen comes.

also make sure your using the correct network equipment i.e *cross over cable* if directly conntected, or a router/hub if you just have normal cat 5.

note i just assume that your using hdadvance, because your using hdldumb.and just made a comment about network equipment because you just said "lan cable" most lan's i go to we just use standard cat5 with a hub. but for a direct connection you need a "cross over cable" they sale for the same price, but only work for direct connects.

*also it might be alot easyier/faster if you connect the hdd directly to the computer hdl will auto detect the hd and you can upload/delete
but doing this everytime sucks.

Aye ofnir1 i got hard proof cause my mate plays on the LAN and net with his HDD HEHEHE! as far as i know is he just pathched the DNAS, but he mighta done more. I know u have strong beliefs in the no HDD net play thingo but it can be done.

LOL strong beliefs. It's not that, it's just that some people like to say 'I know how' or 'it's been done' trying to look KRAD, that's all. You should ask your friend how he/she plays online from the HDD, there are a load of people here who would hail him/her as KRAD GOD if he/she showed us how. Oh BTW, we already know that the DNAS has to be patched to go online, although the Crystal Chip has somethin' goin' on where you don't have to patch it at all.
