im was recently deciding wether i should get a psp or a ps2 and decided to get the ps2. now i am looking into modding it because i modded my gamecube and enjoy being able to load backups and homebrew etc. now that i know that i am going to get a slim line ps2 v12 (thats a given) i was looking into the XCM hddconnect and the DMS4 Pro but in the article that comes with the xcm hddconnect details it says that it needs a supported os. what is the supported os and is there any problems with either the xcm or the dms4?

I don't know about XCM HDConnect, but the DMS 4 is a top notch chip. Go with the DMS 4 Pro for the added features. It has a HD Loader program built into the flash. I believe you're referring to Toxic OS. In order for the chip to read backups and imports you need to Flash with the Toxic OS: http://www.teamtoxic.com.cn/#DOWNLOADS or if it's the DMS 4 Lite, the Toxic Bios : http://www.teamtoxic.com.cn/#DOWNLOADS

so I would need the toxic OS for the DMS4 Pro right. also what is with the "PSTwo Laser Protection NEO-Fix Xii" is it something that is needed/recomended? or is it a "just in case" type thing?

If you get a slimline, I'd avoid the v.12. The lasers would burn out after being modded, hence the fix. This is a snippet from KC36330 a professional modder:

If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. all V12-V14 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even new unmodded PS2's can burn a laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.

26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition modchip.com and norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable

23. Q. What version is my PS2?
A. http://mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm

i don't really want to order a ps2 of the internet. im trying to avoid it if a can. i figure the easiest thing to do is to buy the slim-line ps2 from wal-mart or somthin then gradually order the modchip and XCM of the net. but as for the laser, why do they burn out so fast and what do you have to do to install the fix

The laser fix is a simple solder in mod. It only takes 2 wires and about 5 points of soldering. It is very simple, and will save you a lot of headaches. What it does is powers off your ps2 if it detects a problem with the laser. Then all you have to do is power it back on and your good to go. It is a must have for any PS2 slim in my opinion. If you are buying the DMS4 Pro that you would solder in, the laser fix would be nothing in comparison.

I agree. Make sure you have someone with soldering skills install your chip and laser fix. DO NOT attempt to install a chip if you are not an experienced solderer.

Look if you are going to get a modded system, then getting it premodded is the way to go.
Teammodders or Xmodd are 2 good places to get one.

Here is the break down for you.
Premodded PS2 with DMS4 Pro & laser fix if needed (V12 only)
Teammodders $260 plus shipping
Xmodd $280 plus shipping

Do It Yourself method yourself
PSTwo $150
Laser Fix $10 plus shipping
DMS4 Pro $55 plus shipping
Install of the chip & laser fix $40 and up, plus shipping there and back (I would really not try doing this yourself)
So that is $255 without any of the shipping added in.

So in the end it will end up costing you more if you buy it piece by Piece. Just buy one premodded by a professinal

i dont like the thought of getting a premodded system. i don't know why i just don't like it. as for all the costs im planning on starting off slow. get the ps2 the gradually get the rest of it. i enjoy istalling modchips myself so i won't need to send it in to get.

Well if you can install them that will save you a bit more money.
But i bought mine premodded at Xmodd and have had it over a year now with no problmes, and it is a V12 too. the worst one's to mod.
And i know the guys at Teammodders who do the installs there, and they to a top notch job, just use the link in my sig and go to the forums and check out some of their install pics, they are some of the cleanest you will ever see.
I let them mod an Xbox for me with a chip, and i could not have been happier.

But i understand if the money is an issue, dropping that much cash out at one time can be rough. I was jst offering up another option and a bit of helpful info

Yeah you really should get a premod, for all the reasons Steimy mentioned. If you know you're going to get a chip later and have the money, you should just get a premod. The v.12's are dangerous to mod because they require a laser fix like the Neo Fix II or Summone fix. You'd probably want to consider getting a v.13-15, just you don't have to worry as much about the laser fix. Btw, good to see you back on AD Steimy, hadn't seen you in awhile. Tell the TM guys I said hi. Peace.
