Earlier today someone asked me a rather odd question. His son was playing his PS2 during the morning hours and it worked fine. Later in the afternoon when they went to play it they got this message

After the sony corps logo it says... Browser, System Configuration. At the bottom it says X for enter and Triangle for version.

When hit X under browser... comes up there is no data.

When you hit triangle... comes up version console scph-70012, browser 1.40, cd player 2.00, defaults to the playstation driver 1.11, dvd player 3.10u, mac address 00;04;1f;c3;15;27

Then says circle for back and triangle for options

What is this and why won't the game play?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the laser is not giving data to the processor, could be the laser is burnt out or the driver chip. version 12's are notorious for this.

If it is a bad laser and needs to be replaced, where would I get one? I am not all that familiar with PS2 as I am an xbox owner myself. How do I tell which version ps2 he has and all that?! Thanks for all the help.

an SCPH70012 is a US version 12 console, the first slim model. if it's truly unmodded then send it back to Sony.

i agree, i would send it back to Sony if it is not modded and have them fix it for free.
The V12, when first released, just had some problems with the
above mentioned things. Like the first release on any new console, bugs and glitches are bound to happen.

Thanks for the help. I called sony today and they said they can repair it for $65 or I can exchange it for a refurbished unit for $45. Any suggestions on which I should do?? Thanks again!

if you have bought it at like best buy get a new one, and if they dont allow if try social angenerring. Or with Sony, whats better, a fixed one that you know whats wrong with or a new used one for 20 bucks less?

They know the V12 has problems and I'm sure with the right finesse of words you or your attorney can get them to repair it at no cost.

Just an update... I spoke to a representative today at sony. I informed them that after some research I had learned that there was a problem with this version of ps2's. The person told me that he had no idea where I had received that information but they may have had 12,000 units with that problem. My response was, and mine could not be one of them or possibly the 12 thousand and first?? Anyway, I was told that I would be paying $45 for an exchange or $65 for the repair. So I said no I would be paying for an xbox and contacting the better business bureau. I can't tell you his response to that since I hung up the phone! So I guess this is really not the end of this "project." I will keep you all posted!

You are definitely right on that one KC. I attempted to call back in order to talk to someone now that I am calmer. Unfortunately, the automated answering thingy told me they are busy and to try again later and disconnected. Another thing to fire me up really, but I am remaining calm. I will try again tomorrow... I am sure someone there will be able to help me.

It is a shame this is even happening, but this is life!

Thanks for the advice...
