Multi tap not working on my PS2 slim

I have now bought two Multi taps for my kids PS2 slim and for some reason none of them would work as described. During the four player hook up the menu continued to pop up and would not allow seemless play. Now with one I thought it was the multi tap but two different multi tap units, (actually three one was generic) that could not be it. Could someone please explain how to make this PS2 unit four person compatible? Thanks advance for any help given.

are you sure its not a faulty controller on the multi tap some generic controllers do not "play well with others"

Are you saying that all controllers must be of the same type? If so I will give it a try with all Sony Controllers.

make sure they are also ps2 compatable not ps1
