PS2 Linux on Version 14A slim-will it work if installed on a USB hard drive?

I had the idea of running Linux on my PlayStation 2 to use X-MAME, a port of MAME for Linux, which I think won't run alone on the PlayStation 2. I think it(Linux) needs to be installed on an IDE hard drive, but since I have a Version 14A, which doesn't support any IDE hard drive add-ons, I'm stuck with having to install it on a USB hard drive. Will it install itself on a USB hard drive and will it actually work off of one? Also, do you need a USB mouse when PS2 Linux is booted, or can you just use a traditional PlayStation or PlayStation 2 controller? Will Linux even work on a Version 14A console? I don't need an immediate response, as I'm not going to do this yet, but I'd like it if I get some info on PS2 Linux and its compatibility.
