Hi there...I'm new to video work but experienced with PCs in general. I'm capturing VHS to DVD using the ADS DVDXpress device and the bundled Capwiz software. So far I've found that it works very well- I capture directly as MPG2 at 9mbps with no problems with audio/video sync. My next project is to capture a video that is about 1 hour 45 minutes long. I plan to burn this to DVD5. Since I expect that my MPG file from this capture will exceed the normal capacity of a DVD5 what are my options?

I figure I can:
1) Capture at a lower rate but I can't find a table that will list how long a file at a given capture rate will fit on a DVD5.
2) Compress my large file to fit on a DVD5 (along the lines of DVDShrink). Is there a tool to do that or in your opinion should I just capture at a lower rate and if so....what rate should I use?

hardware....Dell 4600, P4 2 mhz, 1 gig RAM, 60gig HD with about 30 gig available, ADS DVDXpress capture device via USB 2.0

You are better off Captureing to the Correct bitrate in the First Place so your Movie fits on a DVD..
I use a "Bitrate calculator" to Figure out what bitrate I should use so that i can fit a certain length movie on a DVD...The one I use is Called "Power Bit" which you can find if you do a Google Search...

Video Length.....Video bitrate......Audio bitrate.....
90 Minutes.......6575 kbs...........192 kbs...........
105 Minutes......5600 kbs...........192 kbs...........
120 Minutes......4875 kbs...........192 kbs...........
150 Minutes......3875 kbs...........192 Kbs...........

Above are some bitrate for audio and Video so you can fit certain lengths of Video on a Regular single Layered DVD.....Cheers
