Problem when converting from avi to mpeg

i have had recent success when converting avi's to mpeg;s, but i have a problem with a couple of films. When i open one in AVICodec it displays the duration as 1hr 32mins which is fine. But, when i try to convert it with TMPGEnc it shows the length as 271mins. can anyone explain why?
