I have recently been trying to convert DVD to Divx using AutoDK but have found that it takes hours (4+). Is it possible to do this any quicker using alternative software perhaps?

Thanks for any responses

Whenever you are compressing DVD Vob's - usually around 6 GB down to DivX / Xvid .AVI - usually 700 MB it is going to take time if you want a decent result. You can make a trade off on quality if you realy want to go for speed, set your compression to single pass, Constant Bit Rate.

My best advice is to let your PC work the night shift, then wake up in the morning to a high quality encode that you can be proud of.

Always remember these important beer company slogans -

"Good things come to those who wait."
"You cant rush these things."

You'll notice that there is a cool little checkbox that tells it to shut down your computer when it's done. This is what ozwinpunk was referring to when he said "night shift". You can tell it to begin and go to bed, and when it's done, it'll shut down. When you wake up in the morning, you'll be glad you didn't try to speed up the process; the video will be much better.

That's easy Arnold: GordianKnot
Something a little more user-friendly (for NooBs) is AutoGKnot.
Both can be found in the AD software archives :-)

Edit-
Cheers it takes a healthy (read: strong) system about an hour for first-pass, and maybe 90 minutes each for Nth passes with slow psychovisual enhancement, to backup a 90 minute film on DVD.
So for me that's 4 hours to do a triple-pass rip overnight.
And no worries, my PC is still running the next A.M. when I get back to it, and it will present me with a SWEET avi that is all ready to receive its audio :-)

use xvid instead of divx :)

the mention software is actually autoGK (typo there)
google for it.

it actually automates the process that usually you can do by manually.
