NeroVision Express Scenes Problem

Using NeroVision Express (latest Version) I captured from my Sony DigiCam using DV Template and saved it to disc. I then opened the Editing Movie Dialog Box to delete the unwanted scenes. I discovered there were nearly 1200 scenes in about 20 minutes of footage with each scene about 1 second in length. This is impossible to edit.
What exactly triggers the start and finish of a scene? Why are they 1 second in length? How do I rectify the problem? (I have kept the mini tape in case I have to capture it again). Any help would be most appreciated, I am new to digital movie editing etc. Thanks, Sergio
