Avi problems with premier

Hi,
I've just spent hours editing (with Adobe Premier)a short film for a freind and to my horror it's all gone pear shaped.

I pieced together the video from catpured (using a camera and Premier) takes added all the sounds and stuff and then exported it to a movie file. The resulting file played chopppy but fine using media player. I took the choppyness to be due to the size and the fact that my hdd was probably fragmented to hell and back after using these huge files. Next I put together all the menus and that using Adobe Encore, previewed it(all was fine) and tried to burn it. This is where the problem starts as it would not build the dvd. I'm 99% sure it crashes when Encore trys to "transcode" the video. Anyway I've tried for several hours and it must be the video. I've tried loading it into gspot and it crashes it.
Is there a program that could fix the avi file? What about creatinga new one from the avi? or enoding it to something else in the hope that the encoder will fix it? I can redo the file as I ran out of space and deleated the original captures. Help!
