Kinda new to this, but i'm interested in ripping DVD's and then converting them to Mpeg4 format. This is because of the many "media playing devices" out there that support Mpeg4 video ie Archos players etc and the forthcoming Playstation PSP handheld will playback Mpeg4 (and hopefully a video iPod of some kind one day ;-)
Anyway i've found two different ways of ripping to Mpeg4 but am wondering if there are any pros or cons between the two methods?
The first is simply to use Handbrake. I tested this earlier with a DVD lasting 1hr40mins and the resulting Mpeg4 file took 3hrs to rip and used 850MB disk space.
The other way is to rip a DVD using OSEx, then to open up the Vob file in Openshiva and convert to Mpeg4 from there.
Which would you say is the best way to go about things? Obviously Handbrake is quicker, but Openshiva seemed to provide more options that could be useful if you were needing to transfer Mpeg4 to one of these handheld devices such as settings for screen resultion/scaling etc
The PSP has a screen res of 480 x 272, and the Archos 400 series players a res of 704 x 480. Does this mean I would have to use Openshiva to convert, as there I can set the screen res that the Mpeg4 will have, to correspond with the PSP/Archos etc? What would happen if you were to transfer a standard ripped DVD to playback on a screen with a different res? Would it be "scaled" automatically?
Thanks
