Question on editing vob files

I have a movie dvd. Iam trying to make a video clip with small clippings from different parts of the movie to use it in a motion menu. What is the best way to prepare the video clip?

Here is my idea. I used dvd shrink to get 5 small vob files from different parts of the movie using start/stop feature. Now i want to edit the vob file and join them. Once i have the whole clip in vob format, i will see if it can be directly used in motion menu in dvdlab. If dvdlab does not accept vob file for motion menus, then i need to convert it to avi file (with audio).
Please advice me if it would be better to edit the vob files or convert them all to avi files and then edit. Also which editor can be used to edit vob files with ac3 audio.
