in my opinion i think fliptops are a bit of a waste of time, i can see how theyre handy but considering buying one means pulling off the old case and attaching the new one... four more screws to take off the lid to the disc drive and youve got a free fliptop thats saved you quite a bit of cash.
can't people just use the lid of the original playstation2 case as a "flip top" or just not bother with the lid at all when playing, and plonk it back on afterwards to keep the ps2 dust free etc.
i havn't tried backing up anything (gonna buy a modchip when poss) but when fixing my ps2's lens guide its easy enough to pull out and put in discs and they spin happily, my ps2 is sitting upstairs with no screws in it holding the lid on and as i say you can just yank it off to access the disc.
just a thought.

Cheers in Advance!

When the game is being played the DVD/CD spins, which means that dust, e.t.c can get sucked under the disc. I think...

well, apart from them coming in several colors which are mostly an improvement over the regular black of the case, most people don't want to risk pullin the whole top off the ps2. it's a protective shield for the internals of the console, and it will save it from most any falling drink maybe a cat walking around trying to get attention. the flip top is just a convenient way around using a card to pull out the tray and risk damaging the drive.

but but but... to install it you have to take the lid off anyway, thats the point i was trying to get at, i can see how theyre useful for like cat fur etc it must be said.

lol, i can see your point. and i won't say it's not a good one, because it is. it's simply that unless you are a clean, organized person with no one (or thing) that will mess with your system and you keep it in a safe place, taking the lid off every time may become...."hazardous" (that may be the correct word). with me, i've got 2 dogs and 3 cats that get into everything, and there's always dust and fur floating around. also, my ps2 gets carried everywhere and everyone uses it. at this point, i just use a slide card because there's still damage that can be done to the drive itself while it's open.

:) points taken and my narrow mind has been enlightened a little, i guess some people might need them more than i do hehe, also i guess if you've damaged your original case then shelling out for one would be a good idea for their additional handiness!

ummm....the slide card is just a credit-card sized piece of plastic cut to go under the disk bay of your drive; it's used to open and close the drive without hitting the button on the console.
