Deep scan mode takes me 20 hours to compress movie.

I am trying to backup a movie that is around 7.8 Gigs. The compression is around 59%. To back it up, I tried using the Deep scan feature. Its estimated time was 18 hours! Five hours later, it was only 25% finished, but said it had 20 hours left!
How can I fix this?

Hi Jason654. :)
Could you give us some details about your system specs (processor, RA<. drives,...)?
I'd suggest you make sure your drives are set to DMA.

I tried to see if DMA is enabled in Device Manager, but in both the Primary and Secondary IDE controllers there is no Advanced Settings tab. I did a search on Google, and it said that means my motherboard driver doesn’t support DMA.
But DMA is enabled for my DVD burner.
I tried to update the motherboard driver with the Windows 98 disk, but it said the best driver is already being used. If I do need to update the driver, how else do I do it?
My processor is a P3 667MHz and 128 RAM
Not sure of the speed of the burner.
The first two DVD’s I backed up worked fine. They ripped to my HD fast, and burned fine. The third one was the first one I used Deep Scan. My first post in this thread explains what happened the first time I tried it. But the next day I tried it again with deep scan, and it worked fine! Got it done in under 2 hours.
But last night I tried to backup another DVD that was over 7G, and had to Deep scan, and it started by saying it would take about 2 hours. But then in the morning (8 hours latter), it was only 60% finished, and said 2 hours left.
Any help would be great.

Jason654, I don't want to appear pessimistic, but considering your system specs (processor speed, RAM), I'd have to say these processing times might be normal. :/
The more compression applied, the longer it takes, especially if you use the new quality settings (AEC).
In your case, Deep analysis would probably count for about 1 hour processing too.
I can only suggest you try and increase the RAM to at least 256MB.
That's usually the minimum required when processing video (512MB being a good compromise).

And I am trying to backup the last DVD again. I stoped it because it was taking too long. I already deleted the files for it off my HD, and am starting the backup again. But now the Deep analyas option is grayed out! How do I run Deep analyas now?

DVD Shrink saves the analysis results as files.
It will use these files for subsequent backups of the same titles. ;)
To put it another way: once deep analysis has been run for a title, it doesn't need to be run again.
Hence the deep analysis option being greyed-out.

Another question, if I need to stop in the middle of a backup to my HD, if I re-start the backup, will it pick up where it left off? If so, will there be a gap or anything in the movie?

Hello everyone,
Using DVD Shrink, does using "Deep Analysis" really make a difference in the quality ?
I tend to save time by skipping it, and the quality of my copies are still awsome !

Deep Analysis does improve quality.
Whether it is noticeable or not depends mainly on three things:
- The level of compression applied: if the compression ratio > 90%, the improvement might be minimal (if measurable).
- The quality/bitrate of the original title(s).
- The quality of your viewing equipment.
I'd suggest you run Deep Analysis whenever the Ratio < 90%.
Switching DVD Shrink to low-priority would enable you to use your pc fairly smoothly while the analysis is run in the background. ;)

ddlooping i have a question :
I'm getting this error message after i try to open with shrink (3.2.0.15) the files of a multiangle movie ripped with decrypter(3.5) and multiangle processing to keep 1 angle:
DVD shrink encounter an error and cannot continue
Fail to open
C:movie*/VIDEO_TS/VTS_*
the system cannot find the file
I open the same files with DVDremake without any problems.
any idea?

I am affraid DVD Shrink "Open Files" requires you to rip all the files.
You could try using its Reauthor mode and see if it works (it sometime does, depending on the files that were actually ripped).
Have you tried running the files through DVDRemake, and "feeding" the result to DVD Shrink?
