Hello, Im new to this forum and am seriously thinking about buying a new non chipped PS2 and HD Advance.
I've done a ton of research on the subject and have got most of it figured out, but theres a couple of questions I have that I cant find answers to anywhere - so I thought I'd try my luck here.
Firstly Im aware that the HD Loader \ Advance software wont correctly read DVD9 disc's from the PS2's drive to the HDD.
However as there are other methods of getting iso's onto the PS2 drive (such as FAPlink for example) does this get around the problem?
I guess what Im asking is will the HD loader happily run DVD9 iso's once they're on the PS2 drive? (even if it cannot necessarily be used to create the HD image itself?)
Secondly - I've noticed games like Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance appearing in the incompatibility lists - is this because of a genuine conflict between the game and HD loader's code? Or does it simply appear in the incompatibility list because its a DVD9 and the HD Loader \ Advance wont read it correctly?
ie.. would a DVD9 version of MGS2 Substance happily run from the HD Loader if it was copied to the PS2 HDD via a different method (like Faplink or PS2 HD Handiness)
I hope this makes sense.
Im interested in getting this kind of setup going - I just want to know whether future compatability revolves around games being on DVD9 discs - or if its a far deeper problem that lies in game code (that probably wont be fixable)
cheers.

I like the HD Advance alot. It is one of the best ways you can back up your games. It's inexpensive, doesn't violate warranty and makes games load in a snap.
There are no other known methods for getting DVD9's onto the harddrive. Even if you get them on, HD Advance will not be able to read them.
It's hard to tell whether the incompatability lies with the media, or the code, but I will say this; Every game I have every loaded using this software has worked flawlessly (except for Soul Caliber), I have two hardrives worth of back ups (appx 100 games), and everything works great!
So when I want to play Soul Calibur, I just have to get the disc out. No big deal.
No mod works perfectly for everygame, this one is definitely reliable, and I don't think that the percentage of games coming out on DVD 9 media is so great that it wouldn't be worth $130 to use this mod.
Plus someone on this board is eventually going to find away around the DVD9 problem

I have heard, but can't confirm, that converting the dvd9 image to a single long image and transfering using say HDL_DUMP/DUMB may allow the play of these games...
There has been no CLEAR answer, but i believe some people have successfully backed up xenosage (dvd9) it has some hickups, but works for the most part.
I'm curious myself to get an experienced opinion.

This is the compatability list I check the most:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/casey.miller/HD%20Loader%20Compatibility.htm
I would have to say based on reading the list at the url mentioned above that you have incompatible games due to the code more often than the size. This list states when to load via pc to get a game to work and it seems to list when a game is just flat out incompatible.
What does this mean? All developers may get concerned about their game being pirated by HD loader/advance users so they will use similar code to games that are incompatiable at this time. I just hope that day is far away.

soulCalibur 2 is listed as incompatable, but i have read somwhere that patching the image w/ some cdloader code gets it to work... pain in the ass yes.

Champions of Norrath works perfect.. You have to use PS2_HD_HANDINESS (hdd to pc), and put it in MODE 3(highlight game, hit select button), and it boots fine..

b.bomber,
I guess what I should have also said is that there are games that are only 2-3gb that are incompatible. This isn't due to size but by the game engine and how it accesses data.
I have no idea how many new and future games will work but 200 plus games have been tested and are working with hd loader(advance).

Actually there is a way to get MGS2 Substance and other DVD9 games to work with HD Loader. What you have to do is shrink the DVD-9 game down to a DVD5. Then copy the ISO to the hard drive using HDL Dumb, Winhiip, or HD Handiness. Like someone said before you can copy it over the DVD9 with HDL dumb and that but the issue is since it's a dual layer game the hdl dumb will only copy over the first layer. I got MGS2 Substance to work flawlessly this way and both layers were copied over. If you would like I can send you the instructions on how to get this done. The only issue that exists is that the skate boarding mode does not work.

There certainly is a way to play DVD-9 PS2 games from a HD in a PS2 unit. I'm playing Madden 2005 Collectors' Ed. (with bonus stuff) and Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance from the PS2 HD. You essentially "flatten" the double layer image into one large single layer image and use Winhiip to copy it to your PS2 HD. The step-by-step instructions plus links to the software are by a person known as nemisis6m or just nemisis over at another psx forum. It'll be nice when/if Winhiip is modified to write to the PS2 hd from the PC instead of pulling the PS2 hd and hooking it onto your PC in slave mode. Good stuff and works fine. Enjoy. Regards.

ya, but you won't be able to just drop in the disc and do an install.
also RJFreeman: hdadvance, if you really like that, you must then love the real product hdloader. hdadvance is just the HDLOADEr with a different menu color and wording same code. its a clone. a copy, and probably costs more than the hdloader originals ($29.50)...
but some people don't know this fact.

Hello All!! I've had HD Loader for a while and I still consider myself a newb with it so I'm hoping I can get some help here.. I'd like to back up my DVD-9 games but I'm not sure if I understand the process of shrinking the DVD-9... can I just put the PS2 disc in my computer and use a certain program to shrink it? And then how exactly would I copy that file over to my PS2 HDD in a way that it can be read by the HD Loader software? Any help at all would be appreciated!!
I'm a newb help me please!!

Also.... several people have figured a way to shrink and ISO.... the data for soe games is padded to the outside of the disc.. and because the PS2 CDVD Drive is a CAV drive... the outside reds faster... loads faster... so they place the data on the outside of the disc...
that 4GB game you got most likely has only 2GB of data on it... but HD Loader makes an exact image of the game... so that padding waistes valuable HDD realestate.
Check this site for info http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27006 it's nice to see someones hard work paying off
