I've finally decided to do something about my confusion over CD-Rs - get experienced opinions that are *not* from my friends. :)

I only burn data - specifically multimedia files - not audio or VCDs. Here's what I've got on me right now. Is there anything here that I should have more or less of, or just sounds wrong? (BTW, I'm in Toronto, and all prices are in Canadian $$$):

- Plextor 16/10/40A is my burner. Just a month old, on clearance at Staples for $100.

- Verbatim DataLifePlus 80 min 32X - aqua-blue dye, 7 pcs left, got the 10-pk with a $6 Staples rebate:

ATIP: 97m 34s 22f
Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp.
Dye (Long strategy)

- Maxell CD-R Pro 80 min 24X - light-green dye, got a 5-pk from Wal-Mart, saving for special stuff:

ATIP: 97m 24s 01f
Taiyo Yuden
Dye (Long strategy)

- Sony 80 min 32X - aqua-blue dye, has Supremas stamping on it, just 1 or 2 left

ATIP:97m 24s 12f
Sony Corp.
Dye (Long strategy)

- Pine 74 min 16X - unstamped, dark blue dye, got a 100-pc box at a Radio Shack for $50; serves as my bulk pile:

ATIP: 97m 25s 00f
Disc Manufacturer: Disc ID not allowed
Reflective layer: Dye (Disc ID not allowed; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
nominal Capacity: 654.49MB (74m 30s 00f / LBA: 335100)

Of course, none of these have died yet, since I bought them all this year, but warnings of what to expect will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Welcome,

PX16/10/40 - A very good burner
Mitsubishi: GOOD
T.Y.: GOOD
Sony: Varies. Some negative reports, I haven't had probs yet (Plex 12/10/32)
That 97m 25s 00f I am not sure of. If you search with Google you will find that code on a TDK atleast. http://www.digit-life.com/articles/cdrdisktest4/catalog-cdr-p4.html

Anyone, help on the last disc?

The old school is back. All hail the new http://BitBurners.com !

fpelayo, $100 for a 16/10/40 Plextor. WoW!

And I thought the TDK 48/24/48 for $200 CDN was alot.

I ended up with a LiteON 52/24/52 for $120 + tax.

There are faster burners for less $$$. Lots of places in T.O. to get them.

If you're looking for Canadian deals on stuff, check out www.redflagdeals.net

Here's one of the places with some of the best prices: http://www.canadacomputers.com/optical.html

I know, Staples ain't exactly a den of deals - but it's a friggin' Plextor! :) The way I see it is $100 for something that I know can last far over 1000 burns.

BTW, I just discovered that some old 12/16X Maxells I've had since a year or 2 ago are either "short strategy" Riteks or "long strategy" Hitachi Maxells. Judging from what I've read around, I guess I should expect the Hitachi Maxells to die off faster?

1610 is not the latest of drives and not the fastest, but I beleive that you got yourself a reliable workhorse with exceptionally good audio extraction, if you are ever about to do that.
