I'm new to this and have been reading up on conversions in general and to be honest it all is a bit confusing. To burn a DVD and to be able to view it on most standalones which format is best to use? (good media is a given and DVD + or - are about the same with - a bit more accepted in standalones as it is an older format) It seems the more I read the more confusing it gets. Xvid, DivX, SVCD, MPEG 1/2, M-JPEG, DVD-VCD, DVD-SVCD I've read about em all!
So what conversion format is best to burn? I figure DVD - DVD is always best but what about all the ones listed above? There are many conversion guides available but I really don't know what I should be shooting for here? What is best type to have before I burn? Will all of these play on standalones?
So far my luck hasn't been the greatest and figure my nic should be changed to coasterman.
Thanks for any light u can shed on this!

Yo Plazz whats up and welcome
My suggestion and it is only a suggestion,
as to where I am also fairly new to all this
(about 8 months of trail and error...LOL) I
have tried all types of conversion programs
(over 15) I finally use WinAvi for everything,
it will convert anything (seriously)!! the
easiest thing to do is use WinAvi and convert
your files from what ever format xvid, avi,
mpeg ect to DVD...very easy with WinAvi,
then you can either use a DVD authoring program TMPEGEnc DVD author or DVDLab (my preference is DVDLab...i had lots of probs with TMPEGEnc
due to the DVD compliancy issues, thats a
whole other issue, i would really suggest DVDLab) anyway you can use these to create menus,
chapters, and so forth and then just use
nero 6 to burn to DVD. You could also skip
the Authoring portion and burn straight to
DVD with nero once you have converted your
files to dvd with Win Avi.
Let me know if you have any questions. I can also point you where to get guides on using DVDLab. Like i said i would avoid TMPGEnc main reason because of the file compliancy and you cant mix NTSC and PAL files either, once you use DVDLab once or twice you will have it down...
Let me know if you have any other questions Im more than glad to help you out

I just went to their site and it does appear that it should be a free upgrade. Where did you here about the chapter features coming out in the next version?

Thnx for the tip Nav!
Well WinAvi/DVDlab are about the only programs I haven't messed with much. I am at work right now, but with a 3 day weekend coming I'll have plenty of time to burn more coasters (lol). Thanks for the tip and I'll let you know how it goes over the weekend.
I hate to hear that about TMPEGEnc because I'm in the middle of authoring some southpark episodes (that I converting from .rm files to MPEG with EO Video). Oh well, it's not like I havne't burned a few before!

No prob Plazz
Anytime I can help.
Also just FYI I'm not sure what media you are using but i found a great place to buy media and it's very cheap (i use ProMedia no coasters yet and burned over 50 so far) go to www.supermediastore.com and give it a look. Good luck this weekend. Let me know how it goes I'll check in on tuesday.
