How to make downloads fast with Azureus?

I am a new user with Azureus and the whole torrent downloading process. A friend got me into when I was too pissed at Limewire to keep using it. Anyways, I'm having trouble making my downloads go faster than 30 kb/s. I am on a university network with a 2.1 MB/s connection, at least thats what I got with the speed test, while running AIM and a download with Azureus. I've been looking up answers to my question so I've already openned the ports 6881-6889 TCP and UDP. I have an eMachine with a Win XP firewall. My friend is getting about 300kb/s on his university connection and is stumped on how to get me past 30. Any help/advice would be appreciated! Thanks much!
