Stealth Ports affect my torrents?

I am currently on a house LAN connection with a broadband cable connection (NTL 1.5mb) and have been trying to sort out my torrent downloads over the past week. I have tried pretty much everything suggested on similar forums but to no aveil. I opened ports 6881-6889 but this has had no impact. Yellow light is still glowing on bit tornado. Last night i discovered that the vast majority of the ports were in stealth mode. I have the feeling that this could be the cause of the problem, but i have no idea of how to deal with it. We have one computer on the network that the modem is connected to, its very basic and left on 24/7. From this the rest of the computers in the house (mine is the only other computer at the moment) are connected to this via a hub. If anyone else has had this problem or if anyone has a possible solution could u please reply as i am losing more hair by the day.
