Hello,
I was wondering if any programs like Blind-write or Alcohol or any other for that matter use just the one program or do all of them require the use of other programs to go along with them in order to copy a game?
I have tried but for some reason I have mental block and have not had any success copying my Hoyles Games.
Thanks, Jack

Hello jack,
I Use Alcohol 120% to back up all my pc games. But before I can do that I need to know what copy protection is on the disc, otherwise I won't know what settings to use in Alcohol.
To do this I use either Clony XXL or A-ray scanner.
Either of these will scan the game disc and tell me what protection it has and what boxes I need to tick in Alcohol to copy it.
When you use the image making wizard to copy the game to the hard disc, set the read speed as slow as possible or you will get errors.
Do the same thing when you write the image to a blank disc, slow.
When it's reading the disc it will show 'unrecoverable read errors', ignore this, it is doing it's job.
Sorry if I'm telling you stuff you already know but it saves me from asking loads of questions.

No, no, no, you're not telling me something that I already know. If someone has already told me this I apologize to them however I am having trouble understanding how to copy a game.I appreciate all that anyone tells me.
Are you using the trial version or have you bought one of the programs? I bought Games XCopy but it is useless.
Thanks, Jac

Are you talking about pc games and not games console games?

Why are you using Nero?
You're supposed to be using Alcohol 120%
This program is designed for copying games very accurately.
Nero is brilliant for everything else.

I have a question. Do you need a MOD chip to play copied PS2 games. They are still burnt but they are copied using Alcohol 120%. I don't know a lot in this area so I was just wondering.

Unfortunately, yes you do.
There are all sorts of different devices for playing ps2 backups but the most convenient must be a mod chip.
You can have the most perfect copy in the world but you still have to fiddle about to play it.

Did you happen to scan the Red Alert disc with A-Ray Scanner to find out what protection it uses?

Download A-Ray Scanner from the link that Shoey gave above. Put the play disc in your drive, open A-Ray, select the drive that the disc is in then hit Scan.

Nephilim, I just recently downloaded A-Ray Scanner and tried Scanning Theme Hospital and Heroes II, however both did not list any protection? Does this mean there's no protection and if so what protection do you put down in Alcohol 120%?

Are they single or multidisc games? If they're multidisc you need to scan the play disc since it's most likely the only one that's protected.
If they aren't protected then I imagine you should be able to use the Normal CD profile or even use Nero, RecordNow or Roxio if you wish.

They are single disc games. I tried using the Normal Cd profile in Alcohol and successfully made a copy, I then tried playing the backed up copy and at the start it worked but once i got to a certain point the computer froze..

At a certain point? So the game started and you played for a bit and then it quit?

What speed did you burn them at? I'd recommend burning no higher than 24X and preferably lower.

It was on Maximum, so I'll change that to a lower speed and see how it goes.
