Why can I play some SVCDs but not others?

I have 4 standalone DVD players - in one, an Acoustic Solutions, I can play every SVCD I have either downloaded ready made or encoded myself from avi.
But the other 3 will only play certain of the SVCDs, and not others - an error message appears on each of them: SVCD PBC off, and then the stop button appears and remains on the screen.
I tried turning PBC on, but although I did this in the setup menu, it did not affect the error message.
Anybody know what's going on here, and what a solution might be?
