Timing wire, heat, or just plain old media?

Hey everyone

Tongiht a few of us were over to play bloody roar 3, at first it was playing great but then after a while at random times the sound started to sort of stutter (make a "dun" like sound over and over) and then after a fight would not return to the character select screen. Now the disk is old and has a few scratches on it but the audio problem would happen at random times and then at the end happened more and more often...

I was wondering if it could maybe be timing wire related?
Could it be the fact that my ps2 is heating up too much?
Or could it just be that disk?

It's the only ps2 game I have as a backup and havent really been playing my ps2 enough lately to tell if it happens to other games so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem happen?

(just my question of input but for the timing wire if that is off can it happen that the sound goes? or does the whole screen go blank and you can't hear any audio?)
