I have some mpegs that I would like to burn to dvd, but when I have done this, they are unable to be played on my dvd player. What is the process that I need to go through to do this?

I tried to burn them through the data button, which burns it to the disc, but it won't play through my dvd player on my iMac or in my regular dvd player. I have also tried to burn them through the video button, but I get an error message.
