avi will not load into TMPGE plus

My goal is to take avi file, encode with TMPGE plus, then use VCDEasy, and burn to a svcd for play in my stand alone DVD(it plays cd-r, cd-rw).
I think the problem my be codec related, I followed the guide listed in forum, loading the Nimo build8 as stated, resulted in my computer no longer being able to play the avi with DivX or Windows Media Player.
Any help is appreciated.
