I have a silly application (MAX DVD to AVI Converter) that I've used for a while without trouble, until recently.
I wonder what free tools there are out there to accomplish the same - for Windows XP or FreeBSD/UNIX.

Thanks for the pointer, this worked.
I can view the *.AVI in Windows Media Player but Adobe Premiere says it's unsupported (go figure).
The next thing I want to do is scrub through the *.AVI and take selected full-resolution stillshots.
Is there something out there that will enable me to do this -- Premiere, et al, is overkill for doing that anyway.

TMPGEnc - Great versitility when it comes how the screenshots are pulled. You can use filters to blur out noise and scanlines, change color, contrast and many other features. I use it almost daily for pulling great stills from movies, but you can also use it to create excellent .mpgs for VCD, SVCD, and DVD. Can also cut up and join movie clips, etc. I sound like a commercial, but I've been using it for years and love it.
Don't have the link on me, but do a search for it in here and you WILL find it.

Yes, great program!
I used it for 30 days, and loved it...
Was going to purchase it but I bought a DVD burner instead, Sony, $90 Canadian (about 36 Pounds Sterling).
No more VCDs - now backups are AVI or DVD (using Shrink) for me :-)

I'm learning that MPEG-2 compression has to be licensed through most of the commercial programs - but there must be free alternatives to this that will compress down your raw video *.AVI to MPEG-2 layer... ?

forrie, now I'm confused.
You originally asked about backing up DVDs to AVI.
Now you are asking about converting AVI to MPEG2.
MPEG2 is the DVD standard (also SVCD).
So, your AVI is not 'raw video' - it is heavily, heavily compressed, with a lossy format.
The only stills worth grabbing would be DivX keyframes.
If you want 'selected full-resolution stillshots' you don't want to do that from an AVI. If you want stillshots, take them from the DVD!
If you have AVI downloads, and you wish to convert them to MPEG1 VCDs or MPEG2 SVCDs for playback in standard DVD player, then that's a whole different question for another thread (that is not about DivX encoding).
You can backup DVDs directly to VCD or SVCD or AVI, but the AVI is not a stepping-stone to anywhere: it is the end of the line :-)

Okay, I didn't realize this - how do I take a still shot directly from the DVD? I unload it with DVDDecrypter, which provides me with VOBs, then I convert VOB to AVI.
If there's an easier way, by all means enlighten me ;-)
I also use the *.AVI files to bring in to programs like Premiere to perform some edits, effects.
The reference to MPEG-2 was that these programs require separately licensed programs in order to do that; thus, I imagine there is something "free" ou there that will do MPEG-2 compression.

Yes, DVD2SVCD is free and now supports the QuEnc (free) MPEG2 encoder.
But it is not as user-friendly as TMPGEnc... ;-(
To take stills from DVD, I use a software DVD player (AsusDVD XP which I believe is just PowerDVD).
To 'unlock' the protection, you might need to install AnyDVD

That's kewl, importing AVI to Premiere to modify it or whatever; I just meant it's not a good way to capture stills :-)

From what was mentioned here, taking DivX keyframes provides better quality stills?
If that's the case, then how would you go from DVD->DivX and use a program to take keyframe stills? I've seen converters for Divx, but not the latter (keyframe stills).

Hmmm, lemme see now - Virtual Dub will load an AVI and then move through it from keyframe to keyframe.
They are typically 6-8 seconds apart; closer with heavy action, less frequent with little change in the frame.
Hell, VDub will go frame-by-frame too.
If you could capture a keyframe then I guess you could capture any frame...
You can mark a short segment of the AVI, and VDub will turn it all into BMP, 24 BMPs per second (or whatever the AVI is).
This might be useful to you.
If you are looking for one specific 'shot' in a movie, you will have to go into the BMPs and find it.
This is an acquired skill, since sorting the BMPs by name puts them out of sequence ;-(
