...making an SVCD copy of an avi file, as opposed to a simple VCD?

Is there anything to gain in quality?

Thanks in advance...

it is if you have a dvd player that can play svcd. It's like this: vcd = svhs quality and svcd = near dvd (above 2k bps)..

Yes, I have a SVCD player, and I played a clip I converted from an avi movie downloaded from the internet.

I also tested the same clip as a regular VCD and yes, the quality of the SVCD is palpable.

However, since I can run the avi movie through my flat screen monitor (which I did), I find that the viewing of the avi is superior to that of the SVCD.

Which then, brings me back to the my original question (although it did not contain the following qualifier :)), for viewing purposes only, is it worth going through the trouble of converting to mpeg-2 instead of simply viewing the avi file?

What is your thinking on this?

Thanks for the help...

P

1st, I would question the quality of the avi if you say svcd was ok..If you do svcd right, it is darn close to dvd...to just view an avi file, I would not convert it at all...The only reason for converting is usually to cut down the size of the file without sacraficing too much quality or so it can be played on a dvd player. You can't make the original avi better, just smaller in size.

if I could play the avi I would do that..because when you re encode a file there is always quality loss there is just less quality loss with svcd then vcd...

If you convert one compressed format to another, you will automatically loose quality!! This is not just with movies, its the same with audio. You can't improve the quality of a downloaded avi by converting it to something else.
