Hi, I just got my first DVD burner (pioneer DVR-108) but don't yet have any media for it. I think I'll need about 100 discs.

I'll mostly be using them to archive/store data but I also intend to burn some video discs, ie ones that can be played in DVD players.

What are the main differences between -R +R and the RW media formats?

It seems that -R media can only ever be written to once, but +R can be written in sessions. Also if I'm not mistaken the RW discs can be erased and re burned, but single files on the disc cannot be erased or overwritten.

The other thing I'm concerned about is the surface of the non-data side of the disc. I don't want ones that are completely plain, ie with no details or markings or logos just a plain finish (matte?). I prefer the ones with sort of an engraved-lettering appearance to them, with somewhere to write labels.

I'm only interested in getting 8x media, the pricing ive seen for a 100pack of 8x goes from 41 to 72 $ or so. But there are never good pictures of the disc surfaces so it's hard for me to tell which ones to get. Also I might need some discs that can be burned in sessions, like if I didnt have a whole disc's worth of data but needed to burn some.

Also, what do you think about brands, the cheapest ones that I saw were ridata/ritek (same company?) and legacy.

They +/- are structured a bit different, R is write once and RW can be erased and rewritten to. Here's a link that answers your question and much much more:

The RiDATA media is the best deal going. The prices for them are at an all time low and the quality is outstanding.

One more thing, I wouldn't burn faster than 2X for your archives. The faster you burn the less accurate it gets :)
