Is this only for online play? Also, if you make a direct copy (not downloaded image) do you still have to use DNAS?

DNAS is for online checking, if you make a backup of your original and just put it in your ps2 you will get a dnas error because the backup will have a few different i.d codes on it and only the original has the unique i.d code.

To get around this you have to patch the backup with the original id code.
