I make my living in the wild wonderful world of networking. I consider myself to be fairly solid on PC technology (used to fix them in a previous life). However, I have less than zero experience with video technologies and am need of some guru help.
Recently, I got the idea that it would be nice to be able to RIP DVD's of home video. So, I started looking into things like Dazzle and Pinnacle video capture hardware/software. Then, this weekend, I stuck my nose into DVD-R's during a trip to best buy. I was thinking that it would be really nice to be able to make backups of all my old VCR movies. Then, I got to talking to a fellow at work who knows a bit about these things. It turns out things are not so clear cut. He was telling me that just because I copy a movie from VHS onto a DVD, that does not mean I can take with me on the road to play for the kids in the van during long trips. As the conversation progressed, I found out that is also true of any home DVD's I might rip on my PC. I can rip them on my PC but there it probably won't play on "grandma's" DVD player which is a couple of years old.
So, basically this left me dazed and confused. Basically, what I want to do is make copies of VHS movies I have bought so I don't have to keep using the original tapes and where them out. (Is this even legal?). Second, I want to video tape my kids soccer games and the football team that I coach and rip those videos to DVD and share among family and other coaches. What are some of my options? What are the pro's and con's of those options? Is there a good article out there explaining all the file formats and different disk formats? Last, what do you all think of the Pinnacle video capture and Studio 9 software?
I know this is a lot for one newbie post; I'm sure much has been hased before. I appologize. If you can just get me started with some thoughts and links to some good techie articles, I would be much obliged.
thanks!
